Marvel Super Siblings

Fans of GHOST RIDER enjoy the bond between Robbie Reyes and his younger brother, Gabe. We’ll get to see more of their connection in issue #3, coming January 25.

In fact, the Marvel Universe features all kinds of awesome older siblings, and we thought this would be a great opportunity to highlight a few of them.

Angela

The long-lost older sister of Thor Odinson and his adopted brother Loki, Angela kicks major butt. The Angels of the Tenth Realm kidnapped her as an infant, and Odin and Freya presumed her dead. During Original Sin, the siblings reunited, albeit with a few bumps.

Sue Storm

The older sister of Johnny Storm/The Human Torch, we all know Sue as the Fantastic Four’s Invisible Woman. She has impressive psionic powers that she gained as the result of exposure to the same cosmic radiation that gave Johnny his abilities. Of course, she can make herself invisible, but her abilities go far beyond that. Truthfully, it doesn’t seem like we’ve seen her hit her limit yet.

T’Challa

T’Challa serves as the king and protector of Wakanda. He has enhanced physical senses and skill as a scientist. But others have held the Black Panther mantle, including Shuri, T’Challa’s younger half-sister. Though Shuri has had some jealousy issues to work through, at one point, she managed to revive T’Challa from a comatose state.

Scott Summers

You’ve gotta love the Summers boys. Scott, aka Cyclops, serves as the older brother of Alex/Havok and Gabriel/Vulcan. He has seen plenty of drama with Jean Grey, Emma Frost, and the other X-Men. His recent death has had an important impact on the war playing out between the mutants and Inhumans. And now, we get to see a younger, time-displaced Scott running around with the Champions.

Franklin Richards

Sue and Reed Richards have a daughter named Valeria and a son named Franklin. Valeria has incredible intelligence, like her dad. Franklin, the older of the two and an omega-level mutant, can manipulate reality. The radiation that gave Sue her powers also affected Franklin, giving him immense abilities. He later developed the ability to see alternate futures in his dreams.

Thanos

The Mad Titan and his younger brother couldn’t be more different. Thanos, as we know, constantly creates galactic chaos and comes off as very serious and brooding. Starfox or Eros, on the other hand, can cause others to experience pleasure, demonstrates a love for life, and enjoys seeking out adventure; probably not a bad thing that he doesn’t follow in his older brother’s footsteps.

Wanda and Pietro Maximoff

Yes, these two might be twins, but they deserve an honorable mention in any list of Marvel Universe siblings. Once thought to be the children of Magneto, they’ve seen their fair share of heartbreak. The Scarlet Witch’s reality-warping powers have gotten her into plenty of trouble over the years, and Quicksilver has gone along for much of it. They have enormous ability, but also face a lot of internal conflict.

Witness Robbie Reyes in older brother action with GHOST RIDER #3 by Felipe Smith and Danilo Beyruth, available January 25!

Star Wars Spotlight: Underworld

Each week Star Wars Spotlight combs through the digital archives of Marvel Unlimited to showcase one classic story from that distant galaxy filled with Jedi, Sith, princesses, scoundrels and droids.

We’ve all had those nights where we’re sitting around with our friends and a wager makes its way into THE conversation. When that happens to normal people, the results can range from the loss of some cash to an embarrassing payout. When a trio of Hutts make a bet, the lives of smugglers, treasure hunters, and bounty hunters wind up on the chopping block!

That’s the plot behind STAR WARS: UNDERWORLD, the five-issue series lasting from 2000 to 2001 from Mike Kennedy and Carlos Meglia that takes place shortly before “A New Hope.” After a fair amount of blubber busting all around, Jabba, Embra, and Malta the Hutts made a wager revolving around the requisition of an artifact called the Yavin Vassilika. Each of them could choose three agents to track the object down and return it to their respective Hutt.

Star Wars: Underworld - The Yavin Vassilika (2000) #1

Star Wars: Underworld - The Yavin Vassilika (2000) #1

What is Marvel Unlimited?

This resulted in Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Lando Calrissian joining forces against Dengar, Bossk, and IG-88 on one side and 4-LOM, Zuckus, and Sardu Sallowe on the other. Malta’s assistant Jozzel, Greedo, and Boba Fett also wind up in the mix. As you might expect given the less-than-reputable cast of characters involved in this complicated caper, they spent just about as much time trying to blast each other out of existence as they did looking for the Vassilika. And when not looking to kill one another, they tried figuring out the perfect and most profitable way to double cross the other competitors.

Jozzel seemed to be playing the most angles though. In addition to representing Malta to Dengar, Bossk, and IG-88, she wound up running around with Han, Lando, and Chewie in the Falcon all while dealing with a mysterious other party dubbed The Collector. When she finally met up with her secret ally, it turned out to be a faction of the Rebellion including Han Solo’s former flame Bria Tharen. They didn’t want the Vassilika for its outward beauty, though, but instead the key to the Yavin IV moon that played such an important part in “A New Hope!”

From the Jedi Temple Archives

Bria Tharen appeared in the final issue of this series; as you can tell by Han and Lando’s reactions, there’s a history there. Throughout UNDERWORLD, both Han and Lando discuss their earlier interactions with women involved with Rebel dealings and how poorly that went for Mr. Solo in the past. Tharen made her debut in the first book of the Han Solo novel trilogy written by A.C. Crispin called “The Paradise Snare.” Their relationship continued through the second installment, “The Hutt Gambit,” and into the final, “Rebel Dawn,” in which the character perished during an operation that explained how the Alliance got their hands on the Death Star plans in the Legends continuity.

Next time, fly back to the original STAR WARS series with issue #31 as Luke Skywalker returns to Tatooine!

Psych Ward: Bullseye

Before providing the progress note below, this writer must lodge a complaint regarding the therapeutic environment. While I have no complaint with the institution making my safety their primary concern, the lengths they are going to do so seem best characterized as “excessive.” Not only is the therapist barred from seeing the client “Bullseye” (real name unknown) in the same room, the therapist is unable to see the client at all. All communication is done via vocal communication only and due to the nature of the speaker system, it is makes the client’s speaking voice difficult to “read” accurately.

From the file provided, the therapist is aware the client experienced significant bodily injury recently that evidently necessitated the use of an iron lung like instrument to keep him alive and healthy. While the therapist feels comfortable guessing this is no longer the case, I have no definitive answers on the matter and the institution refuses to disclose such information. Without body language, a means of hearing the client clearly, and/or an update health record, this therapist will be greatly limited in helping the client.

Of course, the second question is how much can be done to help the client in the first place and this is not at all clear. Given both his history and statements issued in our initial sessions, the client clearly seems to fit criteria for Antisocial Personality Disorder. Additionally, given the client’s repeated attempts to be famous and appreciated for his skills—initially in baseball and then, later, as an assassin and what seems fair to refer to as a “super villain”—this therapist feels comfortable with a diagnosis of Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

(It is worth noting that the client also suffered a tumor-induced Delusional Disorder for a time, but, after surgery, no longer appears symptomatic)

Those two diagnoses together are incredibly difficult to treat. Even under the best of circumstances, some therapists have speculated that treatment really only helps the client become a more interpersonally effective sociopath and these are hardly the best of circumstances. The client being forced to comply with a therapeutic regime in a prison setting combined with the aforementioned issues above does not create a pro-therapy environment, typically. Additionally, “Bullseye” has made it very clear he has no regrets about his violent activities and has no interest in changing them or his nihilistic worldview.

In presentation, the client is often charismatic but provocative and quick to anger at the mere mention of the street vigilante Daredevil. “Bullseye” is casual with stories of his violent crimes and seems to be sharing them to intimidate the therapist. At times, the client abandons subtlety and straight up threatens the therapist.

Given present circumstances, this therapist does not feel he can be successful with this client. Therefore I would suggest the doctors listed below as possible better options for the client. If the changes the therapist have requested regarding the therapeutic environment are made, however, the therapist would consider at least attempting to build therapeutic rapport and establish an ongoing treatment plan.

If not, I recommend Doctors Charles Soule and Goran Sudzuka. Their writings on “Bullseye” are available in the pamphlet DAREDEVIL #16, available for review on January 25. Alternately Doctors Ed Brisson and Guillermo Sanna are experts in the assassin and will have an academic report available on him on February 1 called BULLSEYE #1.

Psy D. Candidate Tim Stevens is a Staff Therapist who was always pretty good at archery. Not to brag or anything.
