AFi’s “Ask Matty” Mattel Q&A Answers for June 1st, 2012

Twice a month the gang from Mattel are kind enough to answer five questions from AFi readers.  The Mattel marketing and PR team, have replied with the answers to our latest round of questions that AFi readers have posted in our forums.

If you have Mattel  questions make sure to post them in the thread for the next round.

Let’s get to the questions and the answers!

Q1. As Death is not a DCUC scale figure, is there any good chance of a 6 inch Death in the DC Signature Collection? She is amongst a group of characters in the DCU (John Constantine, Dream, etc…) who seemed unlikely at retail and would add some variety to the line.

A1. We certainly could do her as a 6″ figure. The Staction for SDCC has no affect on that. Just like with any other unannounced figure, only time will tell!

Q2.  In the past, when people have asked about making changes to make a certain character more ‘accurate’, we’ve been told how difficult and expensive it can be to make these ‘running changes’. Yet it seems fairly common for these types of running changes to happen without anyone really asking for them (JLU had many examples of these minor variations). Are these just unintentional changes that happen in the manufacturing stage, or is it generally a conscious decision by brand managers?

A2.  Sometimes they are unintentional, other times it is going back to original direction. As for running changes, that is only possible when there is a second run. Most collector product is only run once at a very low quota so there is no running change as their is no additional run.

Q3.  What are those lessons you say you’ve learned from the performance of GL, YJ, Legacy and DCUC at retail?

A3.  Mom and kid interest is essential for a line to succeed at retail. If we want to do a collector only line, you will find that on Mattycollector.com

Q4.  Do you plan to offer a Voltron Sub in 2013, if so any indication as to the make-up of the items offered? Villians, more figure/vehicle combinations, another version of a large Voltron, supporting characters as figures – perhaps some that hadn’t previously been made?

A4.  We can confirm there will not be a “subscription” for Voltron in 2013, this does not mean there won’t be Voltron product. Stay tuned for more news as we work with our partners are Classic Media on the future of this fantastic property!

Q5.  Why aren’t the WWE items initially offered on the normal, 15th-of-the-month sale day instead of the first or last Monday of the month as we’ve been seeing?

A5.  Because we time them to WWE events and shows.

If you’d like to ask a question for the  June 1st submission then feel free to post your questions in our Mattel Q&A question submissions thread!   Remember they can be about any Mattel product including MOTUC, Ghostbusters, WWE any of the Mattel DC lines, Voltron and Cars. Twice a month we draw our submission question directly from the ones that AFi readers post.

You can submit new questions in this thread.

You can find our past Q&A’s here.  And you can discuss the answers on our Mattel board.

Thanks again to the team at Mattel for taking time to answer our questions!
