Deluxe Donkey Kong Figure (Fun.com Exclusive) Review

Donkey Kong Country is one of the best comeback stories ever as well as one of the best video games to come out of the Super Nintendo era. I loved playing it or trying to, it was my older sister that was the expert and even played it competitively for Blockbuster in the mid-90s. Thanks to the success of that game we got many sequels, spin-offs, and copycats. More importantly it kept DK relevant and made him a permanent fixture in the Nintendo Galaxy of heroes.

Jakks Pacific has had the Nintendo license for a few years now and they have had a decent run so far. They do seem to have inconsistent scaling (more on that later) but have maintained a presence for mainstream video game characters in the toy aisle that had been absent before. I personally own several different versions of Link by Jakks and appreciate their work.

Today I’m looking at a brand new Donkey Kong figure that’s exclusive to Fun.com made by Jakks Pacific. I seem to recall seeing previous releases of Mr. Kong but don’t remember if they were this big. Which brings us to their scale issue. They have multiple scales for figures and it can be confusing and since DK is a bigger character I’m not sure where he falls exactly. He’s about 6 inches but since he’s mostly hunched forward it adds to his bulkiness. I don’t mind his size and is perfect as a stand-alone figure but considering the other figures he might be displayed with your mileage may vary. Does he go on a Donkey Kong Country shelf? Smash Bros shelf? Mario Kart? Or even old school Jumpman? Jakks more than likely provides ample offerings to stick him where your preference lies, he might be too big for some character pairings.

I personally enjoy his size but see him as a character I would give his own space to. His articulation is great with multiple points but his joints are a little loose so that does hinder his poses. This could just be on my figure though so it might not be universal. He’s considered a deluxe figure and that seems to be based on his size as he comes with no accessories or extra parts. I don’t mind that, especially for the price point, however I would have preferred a soft goods tie. That would have made him much more deluxe in my opinion, especially if it had been wired for posing, cuts down on plastics too.

Overall I think this is a great figural representation of one of the best video game characters of all time. If you are a video game collector or a huge Nintendo fan then I would recommend this version. I’d only suggest you consider what type of display you are hoping for as he’s almost like a small statue. If you’re interested this figure is exclusive to Fun.com and can be purchased Here.

The figure was provided as a sample for the purposes of this review.
