Destiny to Expand Voice Chat, Curb Iron Banner Quitters

A scheduled Destiny update, due to go live on Monday, will expand voice chat support so that players who meet for the first time can talk to each other.

Meanwhile, developer Bungie is also planning to revive its Iron Banner games, this time with a planned solution to the issue of losing players quitting matches early.

So far, in-game chat is only available between PSN and Xbox Live friends who form a fireteam, which effectively rules out the option to talk in other modes where players team up with strangers.

But on Monday, developer Bungie will roll out Destiny update patch 1.0.3, which allows players to enable matchmaking voice chat. This feature will be accessible in both Strikes and in team-based Crucible matches, and can be switched on or off on the fly. Unsportsmanlike or abusive players can also be muted and reported.

Bungie warned that other party chat services will need to be switched off to ensure the in-game chat system works without any issues.

"It is our hope that this new feature exposes you to people who will enhance your experience," Bungie wrote on its blog.

"Destiny was envisioned as a game that will bring players together for surprise encounters. With the right options in play, those moments can lead to friendships and alliances that will serve you for years to come!"

Iron Banner Quitter Curb

Meanwhile, Bungie is also preparing to revive its Iron Banner in-game series, following an initial launch that drew criticisms.

First released in early October, the Iron Banner offered a series of team-based multiplayer deathmatches, but only offered riches to the winners. As a result, players on losing sides would often quit early, knowing that they would not be in with a chance of picking up a reward.

Yet Iron Banner 2.0 changes that dynamic by offering coins to players on losing teams for holding out to the end. These coins can be redeemed once the player goes on to win a game, effectively meaning players can earn more if they deal with defeat.
