iPhone 5S features 64-bit processor, fingerprint scanner

New phone from Apple the first ever to include a 64-bit chip; is the “most forward-thinking phone anyone’s ever made,” company says; also includes TouchID fingerprint scanner; Infinity Blade III revealed.

Apple today announced an all-new iPhone 5S, the first ever mobile phone to include a 64-bit chip. The company described the new smartphone as the “most forward-thinking phone anyone’s ever made.” It will be available on September 20 starting at $200 on contract for a 16GB model.

“The PC world made the transition from 32-bit to 64-bit and it took years. Today you’re going to see that Apple is going to do it on one day,” Apple said today during a press event attended by CNET.

Battery life for the iPhone 5S will be equal or greater than the iPhone 5, including 10 hours of 3G talk time, 10 hours of LTE browsing, 10 hours of video, 40 hours for music, and 250 hours on standby.

Apple also touted the iPhone 5S’ new camera, saying it will boast “SLR-level” quality. The camera will also include a new True Tone Flash that will analyze and present the proper-color flash for a certain situation.

It will also feature a new Burst Mode that shoots ten frames-per-second and automatically chooses the “best” image. A new 120 frames-per-second slow-motion feature for video is also included with the camera.

The iPhone 5S also introduces Touch ID, a new security feature for the phone. Built into the home button, it will read a user’s fingerprint and unlock the phone that way. Multiple fingerprints can be registered on a single device and it can also be used to make iTunes purchases.

Also during the event Chair Entertainment cofounder and creative director Donald Mustard revealed Infinity Blade III. It will be available available in the App Store alongside the new iPhone 5S as a launch-day game.

Apple explained during the event that the iPhone 5S has 56X the performance of the original iPhone and twice the power of the iPhone 5. It will run Open GL-ES 3.0 for gaming.

“This means that graphics-intense applications can bring their console- and desktop-level performance to the iPhone 5S,” the company said.

The 8GB iPhone 4S will be sold as a free phone (with contract) beginning September 20.
