Kojima says MGSV characters will be “more erotic” to encourage cosplay

Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima says he has ordered art director to make characters in The Phantom Pain “more erotic” to encourage cosplay and advance figurine sales.

Some of the characters in upcoming open-world game Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain are being re-worked to be “more erotic” in an effort to encourage cosplay and promote figurine sales, according to series creator Hideo Kojima.

“I’ve been ordering [art director Yoji Shinkawa] to make the character more erotic, and he did it well,” Kojima said through his English Twitter feed. “Recently, I’ve been making characters this way. I create the setting thoroughly, how he/she spent early life, name style, favorite phrase, fashion, action to stand the character out.”

Kojima added, “The initial target is to make [you] want to do cosplay or its figurine to sell well.”

The designer said he will reveal information about the CG model for the game’s female character Quiet (pictured) on Friday for those looking to cosplay as her during the Tokyo Game Show later this month.

It may be challenging for cosplayers to replicate the new and “more erotic” vision for Quiet, Kojima said. “This one may not be cosplayable,” he said. “What if no one would do Quiet cosplay at TGS even though giving the info’lol.”

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is an open-world game in development for current- and next-generation consoles. No release date has been announced. For more, check out GameSpot’s previous coverage.
