Layoffs hit Sony public relations

SCEA reorganization affects unspecified number of PR workers; all employees now operating from Foster City headquarters; no impact on game development.

More layoffs have hit Sony's game division, though no game developers were affected. A Sony representative confirmed to GameSpot today that a "reorganization" at Sony Computer Entertainment America has come at the cost of an unspecified number of public relations employees' jobs.

A Sony representative confirmed that its public relations department in San Diego has been closed. All public relations efforts at SCEA will now be operated out of the company's Foster City, California headquarters.

"The reorganization has no impact on [Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios], San Diego Studio [which will] continue to operate [its] normal course of business," the spokesperson said, adding that additional positions will be opened in Foster City.

Layoffs have rocked Sony on numerous occasions this year. In March, Sony shut down Zipper Interactive, the outfit responsible for the PlayStation-exclusive SOCOM and MAG franchises. And in April, Sony confirmed it would cut 10,000 jobs by the end of the year. The company also recently scuttled Wipeout shop Studio Liverpool, though that outfit is now showing signs of life.
