M.I.A. Parties With The Gods In Her ‘Come Walk With Me’ Lyric Video

M.I.A. depicts Hindu deities in her (kinda bizarre) “Come Walk With Me” lyric video.

In the Hindu religion, deities are often depicted as having multiple arms to illustrate their power and ability to handle many tasks at once. That’s a pretty good description for the multitalented M.I.A. herself, come to think of it, as she illustrates in her latest single, “Come Walk With Me.” As for the song’s animated lyric video, M.I.A. depicts the exploits of the gods in a retro-computer graphics trip that’s as much unsettling as it is fun.

Having 10 arms would certainly come in handy on the playground, which is what the skipping, double-dutch beat and sing-song melody of “Come Walk With Me” immediately bring to mind. Of course, in this case it’s a playground on a southern Asian colony on the moon, but close enough.

“Come walk with me, you ain’t gotta shake it just be with me,” she sings over Mac sound effects and the shutter tone of Photo Booth software. (No, your computer isn’t acting up.)

The song, from M.I.A.’s upcoming fourth album, Matangi, is as beguiling as the clip is unnerving, and the contrast — as is usually the case with the iconoclast — is probably the point. Emotionless, blue-skinned gods float in the sky and loom over worshipers, lion-headed gods rip people open while giants smash men into the ground. There’s still room for love, however, as two deities share an embrace in clouds. All in all, it’s probably safe to say that this is the weirdest recess ever.
