Midnight Purple 3DS hitting May 20

Nintendo adding fifth color option for latest portable next month alongside release of Mario Tennis Open.

A new 3DS color is in bloom. Nintendo will release a Midnight Purple 3DS on May 20 in North America, the company announced today. The new color will arrive alongside Mario Tennis Open, the first original Mario Tennis title since 2005's Mario Tennis: Power Tour.

The Midnight Purple 3DS will retail for $170 in the United States and will become the fifth available color option for the device. Existing 3DS colors include Cosmo Black, Aqua Blue, Flame Red, and Pearl Pink.

The 3DS launched in North America in March 2011 and originally retailed for $250. Following disappointing launch sales, Nintendo implemented an aggressive price cut, shaving the system's price down to $170.

As for Mario Tennis Open, the game will make use of the 3DS's various features, allowing players to use the touch screen for shot selection and the system's gyroscopic sensor to tilt the camera and look around the court. The game will also feature local wireless play for up to four players and, for the first time in the series, online singles or doubles matches.
