MTV Artist To Watch: Atlas Genius

Meet MTV Artist To watch: Atlas Genius

Dance your way to summer with Atlas Genius, MTV's latest Artist To Watch.

The trees are blooming and the snow is melting (OK, maybe it melted a while ago); it's officially no-jacket weather. And sure, spring's great for long walks in the park, open-toed shoes, and outdoor dining, but let's be honest -- the best thing about spring is that it gets us thinking about summer -- the season of late-night sweaty dance parties, outdoor festivals, and beach trips -- otherwise known as Atlas Genius season. The Australian duo is what you might call THE summer band, with their deliciously glossy, electro-tinged dance-rock tracks (best experienced on their debut album, When It Was Now), and upcoming MTV "Artist To Watch Live" performance on April 30.

Read more about Atlas Genius after the jump.

Originally from Adelaide, South Australia, Atlas Genius (guitarist/vocalist Keith Jeffery and brother Michael on drums) first turned heads with their first single, "Trojans," which, after being posted to Neon Gold, garnered more than 45,000 downloads, drew praise from outlets like Seventeen, Teen Vogue, and Interview magazine, and laid the groundwork for their 2012 EP, Through the Glass, followed by 2013's full-length When It Was Now. Not a bad turnout for a used-to-be-cover band, huh? Oh, right. Did we forget to mention that Atlas Genius used to be a cover band? Well, that was only to pay the bills. Do what you gotta do.

But getting back to your pre-summer dance party with Atlas Genius, you'll want to kick things off with When It Was Now's first cut, "Electric" -- a brutally upbeat, Daft Punk-esque, electro-dance track that begs for a slot on every DJ's playlist. Once everyone's good and sweaty, slow things down for a sec with "Back Seat," a synth-lined mid-tempo cousin to Phoenix's "Fences." Finally, no Atlas Genius rump-shaking fest is complete without their best-known single, "Trojans," which kicks off with a quickened Death Cab For Cutie "Title And Registration" drum-guitar rhythm before evolving into a Strokes-meets-Kings Of Leon guitar-driven indie dance jam.

Now one of MTV's esteemed Artists To Watch for 2013 AND a recent player at the 2013 mtvU Woodies Festival, Atlas Genius are currently touring the U.S. through April and will stop at NYC's The Studio At Webster Hall on April 30 for their official "Artist To Watch" showcase (get tickets here!). Next up, the boys are BOOKED through the spring and summer, with tons of festival dates: Summerfest in Milwaukee, Lollapalooza in Chicago, Osheaga Music and Arts Festival in Montreal, and Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco, just to name just a few. We know the warmest months are still yet to come, so dance your way to summer below.
