Mario's latest outing on the 3DS launched to a hot start in the United States. Nintendo has announced that its new portable platformer New Super Mario Bros. 2 sold 240,000 copies during the NPD's August reporting period (July 29-August 25). The game launched on August 19, meaning it reached nearly a quarter million in sales in six days.

Nintendo also trumpeted sales of another 3DS game, Square Enix's Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. The Mario maker said the game has moved 180,000 units since launch on July 31.

As for total software sales during August, Nintendo reported that 3DS game sales increased by more than 68 percent over sales in July. Additionally, the company said sales of its 3DS hardware line jumped more than 36 percent over July's figures, due in part to the 3DS XL launch on August 19.
