NYCC 2012: Nova

Nova #1 cover by Ed McGuinness

By Tim Stevens

This February, writer Jeph Loeb and artist Ed McGuinness would like to introduce you to Sam Alexander, the newest hero of Marvel NOW!, in NOVA #1.

“We'll be seeing the origin of Nova and how he is learning what it's like to be a super hero,” Loeb reveals. “He's first got to learn about the responsibility of being hero. The responsibility that comes with the helmet.”

While Sam’s formative tale keeps much of the action on Earth, Loeb promises that the Human Rocket will take to the stars as well in short order.

“We want to see Nova in an environment that we can relate to—our own planet—but there's something cosmic about being out there,” the writer explains. “It'll be where the adventure takes him.”

Following up on his debut in AVENGERS VS. X-MEN, Sam Alexander and his costumed alter ego an important facet of Marvel NOW!’s future.

“With first class talent like Loeb and McGuinness on NOVA it’s pretty easy to tell how important the book is going to be to the Marvel Universe over the next year,” promises editor Steve Wacker. “It starts with NOVA #1 and it’s only going to get bigger.”

As hinted at above, a big part of why the title will deliver lies at the feet of the talent involved.

“If you ask me Loeb and McGuiness were put on this earth to make comics together,” insists Wacker. “There’s a special kind of magic when those guys get together—like Hall and Oates, like beer and pretzels, like Kanye and Kim—wait, bad example!”

“I’m thrilled to see the two of these guys in action,” he continues. “Their work on NOVA is arguably the best they‘ve ever done together.”

“This is really the best work Ed McGuinness has done to date,” says Loeb, deflecting credit to his collaborator. “He's nothing short of inspired.”

Beyond the work of the creators, Wacker points to the very nature of the book as being something he feels sure readers will connect with:

“At its core it’s a story about looking up at the stars. NOVA has a lot of heart behind it and I can’t wait until people get to see it.”
