Torment: Tides of Numenera sails past Kickstarter target in six hours

Torment RPG from inXile smashes $900,000 funding goal less than half a day after going live.

The Kickstarter campaign for Planescape: Torment spiritual successor Torment: Tides of Numenera has smashed its $900,000 target in less than six hours.

At time of writing 19,630 backers have pledged a total of $1,026,031 to the project. Kickstarter projection site Kicktraq currently sees the game trending towards a total of $27,893,490 by the end of its thirty day duration.

The project has not set any specific stretch goals yet, though the Kickstarter page says it will add these once funding has been reached. There's some hints at what to expect, however: "some planned Stretch Goals include adding more writing talent (including some names you may find familiar), increasing the number of companions, and adding more Mark Morgan music (including some live orchestra pieces)."

Torment: Tides of Numenera is an isometric RPG due out at the end of 2014, and is being built in the Unity engine for PC, Mac, and Linux. The game is not a sequel to celebrated 1999 PC RPG Planescape: Torment, though is attempting to be a similarly deep exploration of a thoughtful narrative. The game's primary theme is a question: What does one life matter?

Many key staff from the original Planescape: Torment are on board at developer inXile, including writer Adam Heine and designer Colin McComb. inXile boss Brian Fargo was also the founder of Planescape: Torment publisher Interplay.

Torment: Tides of Numenera takes place on the Ninth World of Numenera, a fantasy land set in the far distant future where humanity lives atop the ruins of eight previous civilizations which have previously ruled the planet.

inXile has based the game upon the tabletop RPG Numenera by Monte Cook, who himself originally worked on the Planescape D&D setting which the original Torment was based upon. The tabletop Numenera was also a successful Kickstarter project.

inXile has already seen Kickstarter success of its own with Wasteland 2, and many of the developers currently working on that will also contribute to Torment: Tides of Numenera.
