Follow the History of the Hulk Pt. 48

For over 50 years, the Incredible Hulk has been smashing his way through the Marvel Universe and into the hearts of fans. Whether you’ve discovered the tale of Bruce Banner and his other self through comics, TV, or film, get the whole story here…

Bruce Banner cured Marlo Chandler of being The Harpy in INCREDIBLE HULK #604, and then he and Skaar heard news of Mole Man’s monsters ripping up New York City. Traveling there, Banner set Skaar up to fight the beasts in INCREDIBLE HULK #605, and the young alien became a hero with average citizens afterward.

Banner convinced Red Hulk to kill General “Thunderbolt” Ross in FALL OF THE HULKS: GAMMA #1 and later attended the funeral. When the scientist sought out Red Hulk for an alliance in FALL OF THE HULKS: RED HULK #1, he learned of a daughter he didn’t know. After the scarlet brute fought The Thing in HULK #19, he and Banner set their sites on the Intelligencia, a cabal of genius criminals, in INCREDIBLE HULK #606, and Banner schemed with the Avengers to take down his crimson counterpart.

With a hand-picked team of Avengers in INCREDIBLE HULK #607, Bruce Banner battled the Intelligencia to rescue Betty Ross, whom he believed to be their prisoner. After meeting up with Red Hulk again in INCREDIBLE HULK #608, he failed to free the geniuses his foes held and instead fell prey to their devices. Banner escaped in INCREDIBLE HULK #609 with the unlikely help of Doctor Doom and discovered, to his chagrin, Betty to be the mysterious Red She-Hulk.

What is Marvel Unlimited?

Doc Samson sacrificed his life in INCREDIBLE HULK #610 to confront “hulked-out” heroes created by the Intelligencia, but Banner absorbed all their ill-gained energies to once again transform into the one, the only, the original Hulk. Finally in the presence of his true father, Skaar steeled himself to kill his target. Hulk and son battled viciously in INCREDIBLE HULK #611, but when the jade giant drew his hand back to deliver a fatal blow, he thought better of it and Banner and Skaar reconciled their differences.

When the dust from the battle cleared in INCREDIBLE HULKS #612, Betty announced her desire to move on and not return to Bruce’s side. Captain America came calling in INCREDIBLE HULKS #613 to inform Banner of a mission to the planet K’ai he needed Hulk for, but Skaar insisted his father refuse. He then revealed the planet’s menace: his twin brother Hiro-Kala.

Banner and his son made plans to travel to K’ai in INCREDIBLE HULKS #614, and eventually landed there to confront Hiro-Kala in INCREDIBLE HULKS #615.

Unleash the Beasts: The Scarlet Beetle

With so many classic creatures on the loose in Monsters Unleashed, we turn to their earlier adventures thanks to Marvel Unlimited.

Occasionally, a super hero faces off against a threat that seems perfectly tailored to their skill set. Hank Pym, otherwise known as Ant-Man, found himself in one of those situations in 1963’s TALES TO ASTONISH #39 in a story by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby.

While doing his work one day, Pym noticed a strange signal coming from the ants, so he donned his Ant-Man gear and flew off to investigate. What he found shocked him: a menagerie of insects in the sewers being whipped into a frenzy by The Scarlet Beetle.

As the bug explained, he’d gained human-like intelligence and telepathy after atomic testing doused him in radiation. He planned to ally himself with the trillions of insects all over the world and use their numbers and abilities to take over the Earth.

Ant-Man, of course, set out to stop this, but found himself overcome by attackers who knocked off his helmet and tossed him down a sleek-sided hole. After putting the hero out of action, Scarlet Beetle exposed himself to Pym’s growth gas and grew to human size!

Tales to Astonish (1959) #39

Tales to Astonish (1959) #39

What is Marvel Unlimited?

With Ant-Man trapped, the insects ran wild by chewing through telephone poles, stealing dynamite, poisoning judges, and breaking into television studios. Eventually, the ants—who remained the only un-controlled insects—found their master thanks to the still-transmitting helmet.

Once freed, Ant-Man entered the field of battle where he used a popsicle stick, a DDT rocket, the contents of a toy store, his shrinking gas, and a balloon to finally subdue the insectoid invader. Pym even cured the bug of the radiation effects and let him loose back in the wild.

However, no good idea goes un-resurrected as Scarlet Beetle popped up in everything from IRON MAN #44 and SENSATIONAL SHE-HULK #60 and even AVENGERS ORIGINS: ANT-MAN AND THE WASP.

Pym first appeared several issues earlier in the pages of TALES TO ASTONISH #27 as a scientist whose shrinking experiments put him on the level of ants. Lee must have seen some potential in the man and his abilities because he turned him into a super hero called Ant-Man in TALES TO ASTONISH #35. Pym, in his various identities stuck around the book eventually sharing it with Hulk before Sub-Mariner took the size-swapping hero’s spot with #69. Hank also helped found the Avengers and continues to play hero to this day, making him one of the most successful of the Silver Age scientists who populated these monster jamborees.
