Guarding the Galaxy: Emperor Quill

Celebrate this incarnation of the Guardians of the Galaxy’s tenth anniversary while also prepping for the May 5 release of the new film with these gems from Marvel Unlimited!

After the events of Secret Wars—which we covered last time—the Guardians looked a bit different than before. Stalwarts like Rocket, Groot and Drax remained as well as newer additions like Venom, but two major pick-ups made their presence known as soon as GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY by Brian Michael Bendis and Valerio Schiti re-launched: Ben Grimm, aka The Thing, and Kitty Pryde, now calling herself Star-Lord.

Of course, that left one big question for readers: where’s Peter Quill? Well, as the title hinted at, he took over as the Emperor of Spartax, but not having a great time of it. There also seemed to be some bad blood between the former Star-Lord and his former team that came to light as the latter landed on Spartax just in time to see a beaten Gamora crash to the surface. The most dangerous woman in the galaxy apparently ran afoul of Hala, a Kree warrior who first appeared in the GUARDIANS OF KNOWHERE series. She blamed the Guardians for the destruction of the Kree home world, which Mister Knife actually planned during the Black Vortex crossover.

Not interested in understanding their side of things, Hala smashed the Guardians before trapping Peter in a satellite so he could watch her destroy one of his planets before moving on to Earth. The people of Spartax had something to say about that, though, which gave the Guardians enough time to cause their specific brand of chaos. After getting Quill back, the team then faced Hala once again and put her down.

What is Marvel Unlimited?

Instead of having time to celebrate, though, they found themselves faced with yet another challenge—and another GUARDIANS OF KNOWHERE character—in the form of Yotat, who dubbed himself the destroyer of destroyers. Another huge battle ensued, this one also ending in a victory for the team, but a big hit for Quill. As it turned out, the people really in charge of Spartax didn’t appreciate their planet coming under fire from two ridiculously powerful beings on the same day. As a result, they kicked Peter off planet, which actually suited him just fine as he rejoined his pals and went off to save Angela…but that’s a story for the next entry!

Transmissions from Knowhere

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #5 featured a flashback to three months prior and the events of the main story set on Knowhere. While familiarizing Ben Grimm to the outer space lifestyle, Kitty, Flash, Rocket, and Groot all ran into Yotat for the first time. Our heroes jumped into the fray, but another group actually took over: the Guardians of Knowhere. This squad consisted of Cosmo, Bug, Moondragon, Mantis, and Prism. The first four characters have clear connections to the Guardians, with many being former members. They’ll show up one more time before this wild trip comes to a close!

Next, newly reunited, the team runs a multi-pronged attack on the Brotherhood of the Badoon to get Angela back!

Republican moderates set to thwart party's bid to repeal Obamacare

Republican moderates set to thwart party's bid to repeal ObamacarePaul Ryan, pictured here with congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers, insisted Americans would be better off under the Republican healthcare plan. The push to repeal and replace Obamacare seemed likely to fail yet again as many House Republicans on Tuesday expressed unease with how the proposed legislation would affect people with pre-existing conditions. In a reversal of the dynamic when Republicans last attempted to repeal Obamacare in March, the new plan has received backing from the Freedom Caucus, a recalcitrant group of arch-conservatives who are more often associated with spoiling the GOP leadership’s agenda than supporting it.

Toddler accidentally locks himself in car, has a great time getting rescued

Toddler accidentally locks himself in car, has a great time getting rescuedFourteen-month-old Brandon Emery unwittingly locked himself in the car last week during a shopping trip with his mom. Don't worry, though — he made it out just fine. And he seems to have had an extremely fun experience. According to CBS News, the toddler climbed from the backseat into the front of his mother's unlocked car while she unloaded groceries at a store in Bude, United Kingdom. After she closed the trunk, but before she got back into the car, Brandon pushed the "lock" button. Whoops. SEE ALSO: People are sharing the weird little things that really annoy their mums Luckily, firefighters arrived quickly to save the day. And when Brandon decided to put a coin in his mouth, they swiftly broke the car window and pulled him to safety — making what could have been a terrifying experience a pretty funny one instead. Brandon, for his part, looked thrilled the whole time. "He was clearly traumatised by the whole ordeal," his mom joked on Facebook. And he got some early driving practice! Nice. Secret Empire: Uncovering the Underground

War makes strange bedfellows and that might not be any clearer than in the pages of SECRET EMPIRE: UNDERGROUND by writer Jeremy Whitey and artist Eric Koda. The tie-in coming June 7 brings together the likes of Quicksilver, Hercules, Sam Wilson, and Ant-Man under the leadership of Mockingbird. This unique contingent finds themselves accepting a potentially deadly, but necessary mission to the Savage Land in the ongoing war against Hydra as led by Steve Rogers.

We talked with Koda about bringing these disparate characters together, playing them off of one another, and tweaking some designs where appropriate.

Marvel.com: You’ve drawn team books in the past, but what sets the characters in UNDERGROUND apart?

Eric Koda: The guys and gal in UNDERGROUND are less flashy than the projectile-throwing, airborne firebrands that I have drawn in the past. They obey the laws of physics a little more.

Marvel.com: Did any of the team members, or maybe the adversaries showing up give you any trouble when getting a handle on their looks and styles?

Eric Koda: I would say [villains] Vertigo and Whiteout simply because I was tasked with giving them—and Lupa—an updated look. I wish I had more time to really give them a true revamp, but deadlines.

Marvel.com: Sam Wilson obviously has a huge tie to Steve Rogers. Has he changed his look at all since Cap came out as the head of Hydra?

Eric Koda: Yes: constant brooding. Also a more basic, military-inspired costume, which I didn’t design. I was going off of the great Elizabeth Torque’s [CAPTAIN AMERICA: SAM WILSON] cover. She and I go way back to DeviantArt—she probably doesn’t remember though.

Marvel.com: In drawing these characters together, have you found any nice surprises about how they physically play off of one another?

Eric Koda: I really liked Mockingbird’s reactions to the hyper-testosterone filled environment that was constantly at play. Lotta eye-rolling.

Marvel.com: How fun is it drawing these classic heroes in the Savage Land?

Eric Koda: Crazy fun. The issues of UNCANNY X-MEN featuring the Savage Land were a huge inspiration to me growing up. First with [Chris] Claremont [and John] Byrne and then Claremont/[Jim] Lee. People still cosplay as characters in their Savage Land costumes!

Marvel.com: How has it been working with Jeremy so far?

Eric Koda: Jeremy has been great: super helpful, accessible, and supportive. His writing is on point and he has an amazing sense of humor. Hopefully this won’t be the last time we work together!

Travel to the Savage Land and join the resistance in SECRET EMPIRE: UNDERGROUND, coming June 7 from Jeremy Whitley and Eric Koda!
