Inhuman Nature: Civil War II

Bred by an alien race to be a warrior caste and possessing alien DNA, the Inhumans exist as humans possessed of incredible and otherworldly powers when exposed to the substance known as Terrigen. Living secretly, for the most part, among their fellow man, the Inhumans forge their own destiny as a separate society. Dig into the history of the Inhumans with these Marvel Unlimited comics in preparation for “Marvel’s Inhumans” heading to IMAX and ABC this fall!

For a group that once preferred to avoid contact with humans and live in the shadows, the Inhumans sure have made a habit of getting involved in major events the past few years. That happens when your former king destroys your city over Manhattan while also releasing a cloud that changes anyone with Inhuman DNA into a NuHuman!

In last year’s Civil War II, a NuHuman named Ulysses inadvertently drove a wedge between Iron Man and Captain Marvel. Carol Danvers wanted to utilize Ulysses’ apparent ability to see the future in order to stop threats of all shapes and sizes, while Tony Stark feared what a reliance on an untested power set might lead to, especially if someone besides the heroes used it.

What is Marvel Unlimited?

It started when Ulysses foresaw a devastated New York City and told Medusa, who then helped warn the other heroes and they stopped a Celestial Destroyer. The Inhumans revealed themselves to the Avengers, but Tony remained skeptical. The next time, Ulysses told the assembled forces about a Thanos attack which lead to James “War Machine” Rhodes’ death, enraging Iron Man.

What could have just been a clash of ideals turned into something much bigger when Tony decided to fly into New Attilan and kidnap Ulysses! The Inhumans responded in turn by breaking into Stark’s building and nearly bringing it down around all of them. Future visions led to the death of Bruce Banner and just about as many false alarms as actual crimes. Meanwhile, back on New Attilan, Karnak helped Ulysses focus his abilities. Eventually, it came to light that the young Inhuman absorbed all kinds of information and used that as a way to guess what would happen, hence the hits and misses.

The Inhuman Condition

To dive even further into Ulysses’ time during this huge event, check out CIVIL WAR II: ULYSSES by Al Ewing, Karl Kesel, and Jefte Palo. Originally presented as an Infinite Comic and then published in a three-issue limited series, the story saw Karnak awakening to the realization that Ulysses would change their whole world. The master of martial arts and fault-finder trained the young NuHuman to harness his powers.

Kirby 100: Meet…Doctor Doom!

1917 to 2017: 100 years of Kirby.

Join us this month to celebrate Jack “King” Kirby’s 100th birthday by learning about the characters and stories he created that changed comics forever. To commemorate Jack’s centennial, we’ve sat down with the modern-day creators he influenced—and the decades of work he gifted us all.

Sometimes a comic comes along and changes everything for a reader. For SPIRITS OF VENGEANCE artist David Baldeón, it turned out to be FANTASTIC FOUR #5. As he explained in yesterday’s Kirby 100 installment, seeing the King’s work in that classic 1962 issue in a Spanish reprint completely changed how he looked at comics. He left behind other books and fully focused on Kirby!

Looking back at this issue, it’s no wonder that it so completely captured the future artist’s imagination. Not only does this installment introduce the world to none other than Doctor Doom, but it also features kidnapping, villainous origins, time travel, and the male members of the FF playing pirate!

“I’m not sure I took it all in,” Baldeón recalls. “Not in the first read, at least. It was all image after image after image. The nets, Blackbeard Thing, the sequence of Thing putting on his pirate disguise—I had never seen something like that. Mr. Fantastic stretching from boat to boat! That panel alone broke all the ideas I had in my head about comics. And Doom’s story! It was just too much. But I do remember the feel of ‘there’s so much more.’ There [are] other stories behind and around this thing I’m reading, it’s all part of something bigger, and not knowing exactly what was exciting and enticing.”

To get into a little more detail, the issue kicked off with this new villain, Doom, vowing to defeat the Fantastic Four. Back in their building, Johnny and Ben get into a fight over the Torch’s Hulk comic book before Reed and Sue break it up. They really stopped, though, when Doom surrounded their building with electrified cables and asked for Sue to come up, followed soon by the others.

What is Marvel Unlimited?

“I think this probably was the first time I saw Doctor Doom,” Baldeón remembers. “I had already read quite a few Marvel comics, but mostly Spider-Man. And of course, I didn’t have the slightest idea of who he was and what he meant! I did know, though, that that was not your average, run-of-the-mill villain. That design!”

Doom showed his true evil by bringing the team back to his castle and then demanding Mr. Fantastic, Thing, and Human Torch go back in time to steal Blackbeard’s treasure and return with it. Thrust into the past, Thing donned Blackbeard’s togs while Reed and Johnny dressed as standard pirates and they got the job done. Though Doom clearly became the most memorable part of this story, Blackbeard Thing has also taken on a life of its own.

“Honestly, I think it was just Kirby’s magic,” says Baldeón. “The Thing as Blackbeard is just one of those ideas that just cannot work or make any kind of sense, unless you’re Kirby and do it effortlessly, with just the right amount of epic and comedy and power and pure raw energy to make it not only possible, but iconic.”

Upon the team’s return, Doom turned out to be a robot, setting the stage for a recurring twist still used to this day. The real Doom then began to suck all the oxygen from the room, but Sue saved the day by rescuing her teammates. In the end, they escaped with their lives, but didn’t get their hands on the villain who would become nearly synonymous with the team itself!

“Looking back at it now, it’s just incredible that there’s so much information and so many concepts seamlessly contained in just one issue,” Baldeón concludes. “It has not lost one ounce of power, and it still works like clockwork. It is strange to think of ‘clockwork’ when talking about such an apparently raw, untamed sci-fi/fantasy story. But still, there it is. The pacing, the comedy. You can see why it is a classic. I go back to it and completely understand why it made such an impact.”

Follow the History of Spider-Man Pt. 18

For over 50 years, Spider-Man has been a sensational standout in the Marvel Universe, and this year, the web-slinger swings onto the silver screen once more in “Spider-Man: Homecoming”! In celebration of his memorable history, we present Spidey’s spectacular step-by-step story!

Getting stuck without super powers at New Years can never be a good thing, but Spider-Man somehow managed to navigate the world without his abilities—and confront Uncle Ben’s killer—in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #200. Then, after finding his powers again, he worked with Nightcrawler to stop Cutthroat in MARVEL TEAM-UP #89 and fought alongside Beast against Killer Shrike and The Modular Man in MARVEL TEAM-UP #90.

The Punisher showed up in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #201 and AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #202 to accept Spidey’s help in fighting organized crime, but our high-flying hero found his hands full in the immediate aftermath when Ghost Rider joined him in MARVEL TEAM-UP #91, Hawkeye in MARVEL TEAM-UP #92, and a certain Werewolf by Night in MARVEL TEAM-UP #93. Phew!

Giant-Man collaborated with Spidey in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #41, working to take down a giant-sized Meteor Man. Afterward, Electro posed as The Human Torch in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #42 and captured the webslinger for the Frightful Four, The Trapster masqueraded as the young hero in an attempt to trick the Fantastic Four in FANTASTIC FOUR #218.

The Shroud offered some assistance to the web-head in his fight against Dansen Macabre in MARVEL TEAM-UP #94, S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Bobbi Morse became Mockingbird in MARVEL TEAM-UP #95, and Spidey slugged it out with Status Quo (and used a little bit of Quack-Fu, thanks to Howard the Duck) in MARVEL TEAM-UP #96.

A mysterious new figure named Madam Belladonna then entered the fray in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #43. Spider-Man took on the Vulture’s nephew in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #44 before trying the old flying coot himself in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #45. And Belladonna hired a new Prowler to kill Spidey in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #47…before the Prowler turned the tables on her in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #48.

Spider-Man’s introduction to the cryptic Madame Web went south in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #210, and had an impromptu tussle with Namor the Sub-Mariner in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #211. Luckily, his easy win against the Smuggler in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #49 solved a few problems and cured many ills.
