Follow the History of Spider-Man Pt. 24

For over 50 years, Spider-Man has been a sensational standout in the Marvel Universe, and this year, the web-slinger swings onto the silver screen once more in “Spider-Man: Homecoming”! In celebration of his memorable history, we present Spidey’s spectacular step-by-step story!

The final chapter of the Sin-Eater storyline exploded in PETER PARKER, THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #110 when our hero clashed with Daredevil over the villain’s exposure as a cop. Later, Spidey aided golden age adventurer Dominic Fortune against the Shocker in WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #10.

After puzzling over new antagonist Slyde in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #272, the wall-crawler learned of the Puma’s intention to hunt down the Beyonder and kill him in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #273 and SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #111. The near-omnipotent being himself offered to spare the universe from his wrath if Spidey managed to rise above adversity and stay true to his mission as a super hero in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #274. Wanna guess who won?

Peter Parker stood up to some neighborhood punks in WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #11, and held off one of them trying to murder him in WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #12. A department store Santa Claus proved no more of a challenge to our hero in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #112 than the hoods that attacked Aunt May in her own home in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #113.

When Peter decided to give up his costumed identity in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #275, the reappearance of the Hobgoblin goosed him back into action. After the dust cleared from their latest battle, Spidey stood back in horror in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #276 to see his foe unmasked as Peter’s old friend Flash Thompson. The questions and fallout from the event rained down upon all concerned in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #277.

The wallcrawler lashed out in fury against J. Jonah Jameson for an article he published in WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #13, the Black Fox spurred on an idea for Peter to fence the gold notebook he possessed in WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #14, and the money he made from the fence paid for his Aunt May’s boyfriend’s medical bills in WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #15. A clever burglar posed as Spider-Man in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #114, Doctor Strange removed Black Cat’s bad luck powers in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #115, the mysterious Foreigner hired Sabretooth to bring in Spidey and the Cat in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #116, and the femme fatale sealed a deal with the Foreigner in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #117.

The villain-killer called Scourge tried to kill Flash in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #278, Silver Sable took on Jack O’Lantern in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #279, Spidey joined with Sable to confront the Sinister Syndicate in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #280, and the Sandman aided everybody in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #281. Oh, and the real Hobgoblin tried to stop Jack from freeing Flash Thompson from prison.

A secret project under an Appalachian town confounded the webslinger in WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #16, and he battled Magma not long after in WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #17. To top it off, a shadowy figure shoved Peter in front of a subway car in WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #18. Later, Spidey failed to prevent S.H.I.E.L.D. from neutralizing a kid with powers in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #118, and the Black Cat exercised her claws on Sabretooth in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #119.

J. Jonah Jameson sicced X-Factor on our hero in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #282, and the search for Flash Thompson turned up the Absorbing Man and Titania in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #283. Most likely completely exhausted, Peter prepared for a trip to England following a throwdown with the Humbug in WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #19, and while in the United Kingdom, Spidey foiled an assassination attempt on the British prime minister in WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #20, and a webby imposter in WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #21.

Back home again, Peter found his apartment building infested with thugs and hoods in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #120, and offered his unique point-of-view on a bank robbery in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #121.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Infinity Quest

The hunt for the Infinity Stones continues in writer Gerry Duggan and artist Marcus To’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #147!

On November 15, before these space cowboys can save the universe, they’ve got to save themselves. Managing the spurs in their sides—the missing cosmic Elders, Groot’s inability to progress through plant puberty, and Loki sneaking around behind the scenes—will prove difficult.

We spoke with Marcus to hear a little more about how the team might tackle these problems.

Marvel.com: Can you give us a rundown on this Marvel Legacy arc so far?

Marcus To: For my arc on GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, the gang joins the Nova Corps. I imagine that it would be like the guys from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” trying to do a job while playing spy at the same time. They don’t really know what they’re doing, but we’ll see some old favorites—and some serious developments—that will have lasting repercussions in the quest for the Stones. Also, expect some big fights.

Marvel.com: What can we expect visually from your work on this arc?

Marcus To: I always try to make sure the visuals look fun and expressive, especially for characters like the ones in the Guardians. [Colorist] Ian Herring and I want to create classic sci-fi adventures with the art style we’re coming up with.

Marvel.com: Which aspects of the book did you find to be the most interesting to portray? Which were the most challenging?

Marcus To: I love the unique looks to all the Guardians; it’s something really different than other books and you can have a lot of fun with designs like Rocket and Groot. The hardest part in any team book has always been the amount of characters in each panel. A lot of group shots and crowd scenes take more time to draw and to plan out.

Marvel.com: Gerry has introduced a few new characters to the team—what roles will they play in the quest for the Infinity Stones?

Marcus To: The team is still finding out more about Rich Rider and Scott Lang. They’re a fractured team in a lot of ways and each of them wants to figure out where they fit—if at all.

Marvel.com: The team might be a little stressed with everything going onGamora’s strange Soul Stone connection, Groot not growing, and now learning that some of the Cosmic Elders have gone missing. How will they deal with it all?

Marcus To: Not too well. Some are hiding secrets from the others while others are nearing emotional breakdowns. Each of them wavers, and by the end of the arc, we’ll see who stays and who goes.

Marvel.com: Will issue #147 see any of those problems solved?

Marcus To: There’s going to be a solution at the end for one of them, but we don’t know yet if it’ll make things better or worse.

Marvel.com: Describe the dynamic of the group now that a couple new characters have joined the fray.

Marcus To: The best thing about team books is exploring their past relationships. We’re totally going to see how they react to Nova being there. At the moment Gamora is keeping her feelings on that close to the chest.

Marvel.com: What about Peter and Rich?

Marcus To: This relationship will be a little more explosive.

Marvel.com: How will the Nova Corps continue to manage working with this band of not-so law abiding space bandits?

Marcus To: The best way to find a scoundrel is with a scoundrel. The Corps will learn how to bend the rules for the greater good. That said, some of the Guardians might end up enjoying being a part of the Corps a little too much.

Check out GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #147, by writer Gerry Duggan and artist Marcus To, on November 15!

Kirby 100: USA Comics

1917 to 2017: 100 years of Kirby.

Join us to celebrate Jack “King” Kirby’s 100th birthday by learning about the characters and stories he created that changed comics forever. To commemorate Jack’s centennial, we’ve sat down with the modern-day creators he influenced—and the decades of work he gifted us all.

Timely Comics knew how to put an anthology comic together that would attract plenty of eyeballs. They’d done it before with MARVEL COMICS and many of their other titles and continued the trend with 1941’s patriotically themed USA COMICS. Of course, it helped that Timely hired a pair of comic-making juggernauts—and CAPTAIN AMERICA COMICS #1 creators—by the names of Joe Simon and Jack Kirby to get the book out. While they didn’t take on the entire periodical like they did with Cap’s debut, but they certainly put their stamp on it!

Simon not only edited the book, but also inked the cover as well as the intro page and a splash page for a story called “Rockman: Underground Secret Agent and the Tunnel That Lead to Death.” Kirby’s role in this particular issue also revolved around penciling the cover as well as the aforementioned introduction on the first page and that splash page in the Rockman story, which writer-artist Basil Wolverton drew the rest of.

“The King” may have also had something to do with “The Hideous Dame Kackle.” No one’s quite sure because the story’s credited to Charles Nicholas, which happened to be a house alias as well as a real artist’s name, making it all the more confusing. Anyway, while his contributions to this specific issue might not seem all that huge, think about this: Kirby drew the first images of new characters like The Defender and Rockman that readers ever saw between the cover and splash page.

The intro page also offers some interest for Kirby fans because it’s actually an ad for the upcoming ALL-WINNERS COMICS featuring the first group shot of Human Torch, Toro, Namor, Captain America, Bucky, Black Marvel, and Angel running into action.

After that initial offering, USA COMICS readers wouldn’t see Kirby’s work in the book until issue #5 in 1942 when he seemed to ink many of the stories under the alias of Charles Nicholas. He also penciled the “Hills of Horror” story under the same pen name. He would do similar work on the sixth installment as well. Also of interest: by that point, Simon no longer edited the title, but a young guy by the name of Stan Lee did! It wouldn’t be the first time they worked together, but one more step to them becoming the architects of the Marvel Universe during the Silver Age!

Stay tuned to Marvel.com for more throughout Kirby Month and beyond! And join the conversation on all of our social channels with the hashtag #Kirby100.
