Spider-Man wrapped up his battle with Gremlyn Lord Buel in SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN #23 just in time to celebrate Christmas by fighting Hydro-Man in SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN #24. Later, he snagged the Globe of Infinite Knowledge for the Authority in MARVEL TEAM-UP #5, and held his own against Namor and the Wrecking Crew in MARVEL TEAM-UP #6 and Blade the Vampire Hunter in MARVEL TEAM-UP #7.

The Shocker and the Trapster failed at their schemes in SPIDER-MAN #87, while Carnage pilfered the Power Cosmic by taking over the Silver Surfer in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #430 and AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #431. Spidey took a run through the jungle with Kraven and Calypso in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #253, endured Dr. Angst’s endurance tests in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #254, and once again sent the Lizard back to the swamps in SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED #19.

A webbed-up corpse discovered in SPIDER-MAN #88 pointed to our hero as the murderer, setting the entire city against him. The Daily Bugle put a five-million-dollar bounty on Spidey’s head in SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN #25, New Yorkers became intent on capturing him in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #432, Shot gun and the Punisher entered the sweepstakes in SPIDER-MAN #89, and the wallcrawler himself hunted down the new Green Goblin to save little Normie Osborn in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #255.

Sandman and Hydro-Man made an unusual team to nab the webslinger and Silver Sable in SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN #26, and Mr. Hyde tried his best to beat them to the punch in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #433. Spidey crossed over into the Negative Zone in SPIDER-MAN #90 to clash with Blastaar and his adversary Dusk. Back on Earth, Peter Parker wore a bag over his head to stuff the White Rabbit back into her hole in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #256 and team-up with Hannibal King to nail the coffin lid down on Dracula’s daughter Lilith in SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED #20.

Adopting the new heroic identity of Ricochet to take the heat off Spider-Man in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #434, Peter took on the Black Tarantula in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #435. As the Hornet, he fought the Looter in SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN #27 and the Vulture in SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN #28, and as Dusk he tangled with the Trapster in SPIDER-MAN #91 and SPIDER-MAN #92. Still not done with alternate identities, he became Prodigy to rescue an ambassador’s child in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #257 and mix it up with both Jack O’ Lantern and Conundrum in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #258.

Back in his regular webby guise, Spidey crossed paths with the Black Cat in SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN #29 to fight alongside her against Arcade in SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN #30. After many months of mystery, the wallcrawler finally exposed the true identities of both the Rose and the Black Tarantula in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #436 and synched up with Synch of Generation X to uproot Plantman in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #437. Following that, Ghost Rider paid him a visit in SPIDER-MAN #93, Kingpin, Ox, and Silvermane demanded his attention in SPIDER-MAN #94, and a trip to Europe with Betty Brandt scared up the Frankenstein Monster in SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED #21.

The Green Goblin busted Hobgoblin out of jail in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #259 to acquire a missing Osborn journal, Norman Osborn made a deal with Hobgoblin for it in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #260 and subsequently threw him to the dogs in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #261. Meanwhile, Spidey roped in a rampaging Rhino in SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN #31, dared to accept aid from Daredevil versus Synario in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #438, and saved a little girl’s life in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #439. Any good feelings from that swiftly disappeared when Peter later found himself trapped in an elevator with none other than Norman Osborn in SPIDER-MAN #95.

The webslinger battled Override at the Technomancer Building in SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN #32, received a hotfoot from the Molten Man in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #440, and fell into the tangled skein of Madame Web in SPIDER-MAN #96. Norman Osborn began the necessary preparations for the Gathering of the Five in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #262, while Spidey threw down once more with Override in SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN #33. Across town, the Scorpion kidnapped J. Jonah Jameson and his wife in SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED #22.

The supposed final chapter in the sinister saga of Osborn and Parker kicked into gear in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #441, sending our hero into battle with Osborn as the Green Goblin in SPIDER-MAN #97. A very-much alive Aunt May surfaced in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #263 to further confuse Peter, as well as what he believed to be his daughter in SPIDER-MAN #98. Later, after the dust cleared, Spider-Man witnessed the birth of four new heroes in SLINGERS #1 when others took over the four costumed identities he’d recently created for himself.

Rise of the Black Panther: Monarch Meets Monarch

T’Challa’s a new king and protector of Wakanda in the RISE OF THE BLACK PANTHER: Secret Origin of the Black Panther by Evan Narcisse and Paul Renaud. He’s got a lot to learn in both positions, but things are about to get a lot more complicated in Issue #2 (out February 7) with the arrival of Namor the Sub-Mariner on the African Continent. In addition to solving the mystery of missing Wakandans, the Black Panther now has the clash with this underwater ruler to address. To get a better idea of this unclear moment for Wakanda’s new king, Marvel.com spoke with Evan Narcisse about the upcoming battle and who is behind the missing citizens.

Marvel.com: What’s been the response to Issue #1 so far? What do fans think of T’Challa’s origin story?

Evan Narcisse: The reaction has been largely positive. I’m trying to not dig too deep into abusing stuff and I don’t want it to mess with my head. A few friends have screenshotted [positive reactions] and sent me [them]. I think people really like getting to know more about T’Chaka and about N’Yami, T’Challa’s mother who really has not been written about much at all in the Black Panther mythos. I think [readers] like that stuff and I was happy to kind of flesh out some of the older generation of Black Panther characters in Issue #1, so that was great

Marvel.com: What can you tell us about Issue #2 and the places the new king will find himself?

Evan Narcisse: In Issue #2, T’Challa unearths a cover-up that happened during the reign of his uncle, S’yan. S’yan was the person who became the Black Panther after T’Chaka got killed, so he ruled as regent while T’Challa was growing up. We see T’Challa basically find out about a mysterious occurrence during S’yan’s reign that he now has to figure out how to resolve. In doing so, he comes into conflict with [Namor], the Sub-Mariner. Namor is on the African continent because he’s on the trail of some traitors who have been working with people on the African continent.

In classic Marvel fashion, Namor and T’Challa fight and they wind up fighting a mutual foe. What’s more important is that we get to see some compare and contrast action with Namor and T’Challa. There’s some similarities between the two characters, but also big differences and it was fun to kind of mine to that tension. These characters have history going way, way back to the ‘70s when there was a classic DEFENDERS storyline that had them in political conflict and they bounce off of each other time and time again. There was a great moment during the Christopher Priest BLACK PANTHER series that started in 1998, the Sturm Und Drang storyline where there was a political conflict between multiple sovereign nations in the Marvel Universe and Namor and T’Challa went at each other there and then again in Jonathan Hickman’s NEW AVENGERS series where they were both members of the Illuminati.

Marvel.com: I’m glad you brought up Namor because that’s next question. What exactly is getting between the two rulers?

Evan Narcisse: Namor, traditionally, has needled T’Challa a lot; he’s a lot more brash and impetuous and T’Challa’s more thoughtful and considerate, so they’re kind of natural foils for each other and that comes to the fore in Issue #2. Basically, Namor gets attacked when he’s in Africa and he blames T’Challa; he happens to be very close to Wakanda. T’Challa, even after they resolve their conflict, has to decide what his stance toward the Sub-Mariner’s gonna be in the future now that he knows about him and now that Namor knows about Wakanda and their interaction kind of informs T’Challa’s decision to reveal Wakanda to the world. He’s like, ‘If us being a secret gives other people power, then we need to remove that power from them and basically come to the world on our own terms.’ We see the beginnings of that decision in Issue #2 and it does not go over well with other people in Wakanda.

Marvel.com: In what ways is T’Challa still growing as a king? What lessons does he still need to learn?

Evan Narcisse: He learns that being responsible for the security of Wakanda is gonna put him in the position of having to make some hard, moral decisions. Things, that from the outside looking in, look easy enough, but when you have to consider the ramifications, it’s a lot more tricky to navigate.

Marvel.com: There’s this aspect of the missing Wakandans. Can readers expect some classic Panther villains to begin popping up and claiming responsibility for these missing people?

Evan Narcisse: Not quite, but the main villain in the issue, and I don’t want to give it away, is a very particular, deep-cut character created by Roy Thomas who happens to align perfectly with some of Wakanda’s historical enemies. And that’s all I feel comfortable saying right now.

RISE OF THE BLACK PANTHER #2, by Evan Narcisse, Ta-Nehisi Coates, and Paul Renaud, emerges on February 7!

Can’t get enough? Watch Evan Narcisse discuss the world of Wakanda in “RISE OF THE BLACK PANTHER” in this special video installment of This Week in Marvel podcast or listen/download the entire conversation here.

Flashback Friday: Black Widow

Every Friday, we use the powers of Marvel Unlimited to look back at the very first appearance of a major character, place, or object that made waves this week.

Is Natasha Romanoff really dead?

Hawkeye and The Winter Soldier have been wrestling with this question in spite of themselves throughout the pages of TALES OF SUSPENSE. In the wake of the events of Secret Empire, in which Romanoff, A.K.A. Black Widow, met her demise at the hands of Hydra Captain America, her two former friends—and sometimes love interests—have been following a strange trail that seems to have been left by the heroine.

As the mystery surrounding Natasha swells in the current run of TALES OF SUSPENSE, readers may recall that the character actually made her debut in issue #52 of the series back in 1964. In that story, by Stan Lee, Don Rico, and Don Heck, Natasha Romanoff worked for the Russian government as a spy alongside a man known only as Boris. The duo was tasked with breaking into Tony Stark’s facilities, grabbing defected scientist Professor Anton Vanko, and reclaiming the highly advanced Crimson Dynamo armor.

To facilitate their mission, they took on cover identities as a brother-sister duo visiting Stark’s lab in order to learn about the technology and bring it back to teach children in the Ukraine. Stark responded positively—and even asked Madame Natasha out to dinner while Boris finished his tour. Alone now, Boris managed to find not only find Vankov, but also the Dynamo armor! After donning the suit himself, Boris destroyed the Stark compound.

Hearing about the attack, Tony cut dinner short and raced back to his headquarters with Natasha at his side. Once there, he ran off to put on his Iron Man armor, leaving Black Widow to utilize her spy training to distract the Armored Avenger from taking out her comrade. Vanko, seizing a moment of opportunity, destroyed the Dynamo armor and himself in the process. The Widow used the resulting explosion to make her escape before returning in the next issue to make up for her failed mission. Though she claimed never to fail a mission twice, that’s exactly what happened as she once again missed out on killing Tony Stark.

Romanoff, disgruntled at her recent losses, changed her tactics and manipulated circus trick shot archer Clint Barton, A.K.A. Hawkeye, into attacking Iron Man. Though, after Natasha’s Communist handlers disrupted the plan, Hawkeye saw reason, vowing to use his abilities for good. He joined the Avengers soon after.

Natasha, back in Russia, was brainwashed once again and tasked with destroying the Avengers. She entered the mission alongside fellow baddies Swordsman and the first Power Man, but eventually her indoctrination wore off, she defected, and joined Barton in the name of good.

FLASH FORWARD

The Black Widow actually trained with the Winter Soldier as far back as the 1950s—she joined her fellow Russian operatives to retrain Bucky Barnes as an agent of the Soviet Union. The two began a brief romance, but the Russians had lingering worries about Bucky’s programming, so they decided to freeze him and thaw him out only when necessary.

After regaining his memories thanks to Captain America and the power of a Cosmic Cube, Bucky also managed to recall his time with Natasha. The heroes restarted their relationship, but the star-crossed lovers were foiled once again when a Russian sleeper agent brainwashed Black Widow, clearing her mind of her relationship with Barnes in the process.
