Ed Sheeran Discusses His Love Of Cats, Dislike Of Garfield At The 2012 mtvU Woodie Awards Festival

To you, Ed Sheeran may be the undeniably huggable, ginger troubadour who may or may not have been separated at birth from Rupert Grint (whom he tapped to star in his "Lego House" video along with One Direction's Harry Styles). He's also the folksy, angelic-voiced, rap-obsessed singer-songwriter who earned Jamie Foxx's co-sign and went on to score top honors at this year's BRIT Awards. But to me, Ed Sheeran will always be the adorably disheveled British boy who made one of the greatest cat videos of all time. (I know because I've seen them all.) By casting a (real!) cat as his wingman in his "Drunk" video, Ed Sheeran didn't just win me over (not to brag, but I'm, like, kind of a cat person) -- he also racked up over five million video streams since January. Many millions of which were mine. (Because did I mention I really love cats? Because I do.)

So, before Ed Sheeran opened the 2012 mtvU Woodie Awards Festival, I showed him a few cat photos I just so happened to have on me (okay, fine, so I selected them from my own painstakingly curated archive of cat thousands of photos) to get at the heart of his cat obsession and find out what he really looks for in a cat. On behalf of cat people everywhere ("cat person" being a source of pride and not some pejorative term for the sort of people who wear Christmas sweaters yearround... did I mention I recently bought a really cute new holiday sweater I can't wait to wear?), I wanted to make sure that Ed Sheeran was a TRUE cat person and not just posing as one for the sake of a viral video. And, much to my relief, I discovered not just that Ed's a true cat person (stars -- they're just like those of us not ashamed to admit we're cat people!) but that Ed's affection for cats peaks at tiger tabbies (also my favorite breed!). Yet I will say I almost had to stop the interview when he revealed he has no love for one of America's most beloved cats of all time: Garfield. This is America, bro! You don't eff with a nation's favorite curmudgeonly fictitious cat. He also didn't know who TV's Kat Dennings is! I'd almost consider that a strike against him, but, to be fair, I didn't know who Top Cat was, so what kind of cat expert do they think I am? (#shame.) Well, you know what they say: Just when you think you semi-loserishly know everything there is to know about cats, Ed Sheeran comes along and schools you in cats you should know!
