Fletcher Hanks’ “Stardust the Super Wizard” Figurine on Kickstarter

This past week I got an email from Jared Z. about a kickstarter figure campaign that will appeal to fans of the Eaglemoss metal figures, the Golden Age of comics and fans of the weird:

This is a figurine of an offbeat Golden Age character called Stardust the Super Wizard, originally created by the infamous Fletcher Hanks. His comics have been described as “Basil Wolverton meets Ed Wood,” to give you an idea of his unique brand of storytelling. Stardust was a sort of psychotic Superman who specialized in administering very odd punishments on evildoers. Hanks’ bizarre body of work has been collected in two excellent books edited by Paul Karasik, I Shall Destroy All the Civilized Planets! and You Shall Die By Your Own Evil Creation!, both published by Fantagraphics.

The goal of the Kickstarter is to raise funds for limited production run of the figure, which will be made of white metal and hand-painted. The figure is sculpted at 1/21 scale, the same scale as the Marvel and DC figurines produced by Eaglemoss of England. The figure stands 4.45″ (11.3 cm) tall including the base; the cost is $25 plus shipping for a single figurine. Backers should receive their figure by March/April 2013. The campaign ends Friday, December 14 at 12:54 am. If the project is successful, it may lead to an ongoing series of figurines of Golden Age comics characters in the public domain.
