Metro: Last Light coming to Mac, Linux

Deep Silver reveals Mac version will launch on September 10, while Linux iteration coming later in the year; Metro franchise will "absolutely continue," says CEO.

Deep Silver and 4A Games announced today that a Mac version of Metro: Last Light will arrive on September 10, while a Linux iteration will be released later in the year.

In a statement, 4A Games chief technology officer Oles Shishkovstov said bringing the first-person shooter to Mac and Linux is "further testimony to the power and flexibility" of the studio's proprietary 4A Engine.

The Mac and Linux versions of Metro: Last Light are in development at 4A Games.

Metro: Last Light on Steam will support Steam Play and will receive the same downloadable content as the PC and console versions.

Separately, Deep Silver CEO Dr. Klemens Kundratitz told Joystiq that purchasing the Metro franchise during the THQ bankruptcy auction for $5.9 million has been a "positive experience" and said the franchise will continue.

"I'm very glad we acquired that brand," Kundratitz said. "While it launched in a very dry space in the gaming calendar this year, it still got a lot of attention. Our ambition is to absolutely continue with that brand and we will also, in the next phase, look to making it more accessible for a broader gamer audience."

GameStop managers get PS4, Xbox One

[UPDATE] Retailer confirms all store managers will receive next-generation consoles and games for free at launch this holiday season.

[UPDATE] Neowin has confirmed with a GameStop representative that all store managers will also receive an Xbox One at launch. No mention was made of any free games.

The original story is below.

All GameStop managers will receive a PlayStation 4 unit and seven games at launch, the retailer confirmed with Joystiq, after an original announcement at the GameStop Expo today in Las Vegas.

Games gifted to GameStop managers are Killzone: Shadow Fall, NBA 2K14, Madden NFL 25, FIFA 14, Need for Speed: Rivals, Battlefield 4, and PlayStation 3 game Beyond: Two Souls.

A GameStop spokesperson told Joystiq, "Beyond is for PS3, all others are for PS4. Some are physical and some are digital vouchers."

To prepare its employees for the impending arrival of the Xbox One and PS4, GameStop president Tony Bartel said last week that the company's 4,400 store managers in the United States will receive hands-on training with both platforms.

"We will continue to be the most knowledgeable source for buying a new console and related games and accessories," Bartel said.

The Xbox One and PS4 will launch in November. It is not clear if GameStop managers will also receive an Xbox One and games.

Bethesda “pushing” Microsoft to drop XBL Gold fee for Elder Scrolls Online

Publisher says it has spoken with Microsoft about possibility of dropping Xbox Live Gold membership fee for upcoming MMORPG.

Bethesda is "pushing" Microsoft to make a special exception in the case of upcoming massively multiplayer online role-playing game The Elder Scrolls Online and drop the Xbox Live Gold fee for gamers interested in playing that title on Xbox One.

Speaking with OXM, Bethesda vice president of PR and marketing Pete Hines acknowledged that the Xbox Live subscription fee--about $5 per month--pays for services not specific to any particular title. However, he said Bethesda is working with Microsoft on potentially changing the rules.

"Having said that, we have been in talks with Microsoft about that very thing, and seeing whether or not there's any room to change their minds about that," Hines said. "For folks who are only paying [sic] The Elder Scrolls Online and don't want to pay for an Xbox Live Gold subscription, just to pay [sic] the Elder Scrolls Online."

Hines said right now there is no way around the Xbox Live Gold fee, but made clear that the issue is "something that we're aware of and we keep pushing on to see if there's something that can be done."

The Elder Scrolls Online will carry a $15/month subscription fee for PC. For the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions, players will need to pay this fee in addition to Xbox Live Gold and PlayStation Plus membership costs.

World of Tanks developer Wargaming CEO Victor Kislyi said in June that he was unhappy with the Xbox Live Gold requirement for free-to-play game World of Tanks, though he said there is nothing he can do about it.

"They cannot drop it for us because they would have to drop it for everyone and it would be a total mess for them. This we have to tolerate, which I am not happy about," he said at the time.

The Elder Scrolls Online is aiming for release on the PC, Xbox One, and PS4 in spring 2014, though official release dates have not been announced. For more on the MMO game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Sid Meier’s Ace Patrol hitting PC today

2K and Firaxis Games announce World War I-set strategy game coming to PC today through Steam for $10.

Sid Meier's Ace Patrol--a World War I-set strategy game from the Civilization series designer and industry veteran--is coming to PC today through Steam, 2K and Firaxis Games have announced.

The game will be available today on Steam for $10 and is a "premium version" of the free-to-play iOS game that launched in May 2013.

"The overwhelmingly positive response from both fans and media alike surrounding the launch of Sid Meier’s Ace Patrol has made it impossible to ignore the title's potential," said 2K SVP of marketing Sarah Anderson in a statement.

The game was conceived, designed, and programmed by Meier himself. In Ace Patrol, players pilot vintage aircraft and must defend their base camp and allies from invaders.

In addition to a turn-based single-player mode, Sid Meier's Ace Patrol offers two-player multiplayer either locally or through asynchronous play via Game Center.
