Follow the History of the Hulk Pt. 45

For over 50 years, the Incredible Hulk has been smashing his way through the Marvel Universe and into the hearts of fans. Whether you’ve discovered the tale of Bruce Banner and his other self through comics, TV, or film, get the whole story here…

Stranded on the planet Sakaar by Earth’s heroes, The Hulk battled the alien menace of the Spikes in INCREDIBLE HULK #100, and then enlisted the aid of the strange Shadow Elders in his war against the Red King. In INCREDIBLE HULK #101 the green giant stole the Elders’ spaceship and rescued an ally.

INCREDIBLE HULK #102 presented the Hulk’s final, personal battle with the Red King and his rise to the empty throne in its aftermath. Once ruling the planet, he attempted to unite all warring factions in INCREDIBLE HULK #103, and took his ally Caiera as his queen. Later, the Hulk helped the Spikes return to their own world in INCREDIBLE HULK #104.

When the jade giant’s original Erath vessel unexpectedly exploded and killed millions of citizens along with his queen, he swore revenge in INCREDIBLE HULK #105. Gathering together a select cadre of his best warriors, Hulk left a devastated Sakaar for Earth in the Elders’ spaceship in INCREDIBLE HULK #106. Approaching his home planet, he relived past fights with the heroes who had banished him in WORLD WAR HULK: PROLOGUE #1.

In WORLD WAR HULK #1, the Hulk easily conquered the first of his tormentors, Black Bolt of the Inhumans, and moved on to confront Iron Man. When Tony Stark heard the Hulk’s intentions, he donned his Hulkbuster armor and flew off to face the emerald behemoth in IRON MAN #19. After fighting Hercules in INCREDIBLE HULK #107, Hulk finally clashed with the Armored Avenger, handily beating him.

Next, Hulk and his Warbound fought She-Hulk in WORLD WAR HULK #2 before moving on to take care of Reed Richards. With Tony Stark subdued in IRON MAN #20, the green warrior demanded the head of Nick Fury, and then reflected on his past friendship with Rick Jones and his compact with the Warbound in INCREDIBLE HULK #108.

General “Thunderbolt” Ross, his men, and Doctor Strange attacked The Hulk in WORLD WAR HULK #3 as brainiac Amadeus Cho and his Renegades threw in with the Warbound in INCREDIBLE HULK #109. Later, Cho left to confront Hulk in a gigantic arena the jade giant had established in Manhattan. There, in INCREDIBLE HULK #110, he set out to prove that Hulk never killed anyone and should spare the heroes’ lives.

From his throne in the arena, Hulk passed judgment on his tormentors in WORLD WAR HULK #4, while Wong and the Renegades dealt with a being of immense power freed after Doctor Strange’s defeat in INCREDIBLE HULK #111.

Unleash the Beasts: Thorr

With so many classic creatures on the loose in Monsters Unleashed, we turn to their earlier adventures thanks to Marvel Unlimited.

Some villains come up with a plan and execute it right away while others take their time. Thorr definitely leaned more towards the latter as he waited a million years to destroy humanity!

As seen in a Jack Kirby-drawn story segment of TALES TO ASTONISH #16, an archaeologist named Linus and his less-than-nice wife Helen headed to a Pacific island populated with huge headed statues very similar to the ones seen on Easter Island. Their native guide explained that the statues preceded even their initial ancestors who populated the island many years ago. While digging around one of the oddities Linus discovered something even weirder: a high tech control room!

The thing called Thorr rose and revealed that he had come to Earth a million years prior as part of a plan to populate every planet in the cosmos with sleeper agents that could help the race invade and conquer when the time proved beneficial. Thanks to some quick thinking, Linus convinced Thorr not to contact his fellow invaders right away. The archaeologist explained that the island actually made up the bulk of the planet and that excessive force would not be needed.

Thorr staked his claim and eventually summoned his brethren, but Linus continued to make secret plans that panned out surprisingly well. Once the craft landed, the scientist tossed a bundle of dynamite into the nearby volcano. Between the rush of lava and their inability to swim given their size, the giants stood zero chance against the attack!

As it turned out, even plots that simmer for a million years don’t always go as planned when the human element gets involved!

Want an extra bit of trivia? In addition to including a character called Thorr, TALES TO ASTONISH #16 also featured a story with Doom in the title, an attack by Mole Men and a crazy Steve Ditko-drawn tale about an evil sorcerer. It sure seems like those guys were on to some ideas that would take root and grow into something marvelous!

Next time, meet the menace of Gorgilla!
