Big in Japan July 30-August 5: Dragon Quest X

New Wii RPG debuts at number one; Wii sales experience surge.

Gamers familiar with game sales in Japan should be well aware of the high sales track record of the Dragon Quest series. The trend has continued with the release of Dragon Quest X for the Wii last week.

The RPG debuted in the top spot of the Media Creates sales chart for the week of July 30 to August 5 with 367,148 units sold. The sequel features five continents for players to explore and six playable races (human, ogre, elf, dwarf, puklipo, weddie) for players to experiment with. This game marks the first time the series has adopted the mass multiplayer online RPG genre, as players have to pay a set subscription fee after the initial 20 days of free online play.

Other debuts include All Kamen Rider: Rider Generation 2 for the DS and the PSP. The DS version was at eighth place with 20,459 units sold, while the PSP version was at 14th place with 12,928 units sold. Both versions of the 2D side-scrolling action title are identical; players get to pick among a stable of past and present Kamen Rider superheroes to fight off enemies from past Kamen Rider episodes and universes.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 was at second place in the top 10 with 213,547 units sold. The game was recently praised for its controls and layers of secrets within its design, but was panned for its frustrating co-op and nostalgic retreads for its levels. Atlus' and Arc System Works' recent fighting game stood strong amidst the new releases. The PS3 version of Persona 4 Arena was at seventh place with 20,477 units sold. The game was recently praised for its fighting mechanics and visuals, but was criticized for its dry narrative presentation. Check out GameSpot's review for more information.

In terms of hardware sales, the Wii received a considerable spike in sales due to the release of Dragon Quest X. Sales for the system went up to 41,415 units. Otherwise, the 3DS still had the lead; the XL version was at 82,251 units while the regular version was at 42,164, which added up to 124,415 in total.
