Bungie says Destiny can sit alongside Star Wars, Lord of the Rings

COO Pete Parsons says studio wants people to put new series on same shelf as major fantasy and sci-fi franchises, game has potential to surpass impact of Halo.

Bungie is shooting for the stars with its upcoming online shooter Destiny. COO Pete Parsons told GamesIndustry International in an interview that the new fantasy series has the potential to surpass the impact of Halo and sit on people's shelves next to established entertainment juggernauts.

"We like to tell big stories and we want people to put the Destiny universe on the same shelf they put Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, or Star Wars; we've already seen they do that with Halo," Parsons said. "We were extremely proud of what we achieved with Halo’ I'm pretty convinced we are going to do it again with Destiny in a way that maybe even Halo never achieved before."

Parsons said publisher Activision believes in Bungie's vision for Destiny. He said, "these guys know big entertainment as well. They prove it over and over again."

Overall, Parsons said the pieces are in place for Destiny to be able to go head-to-head with almost any other form of entertainment.

"We've always admired people like Pixar, and we are finally in that moment where we have this raw, amazing talent that I think rivals entertainment creators anywhere across any entertainment ever, and Activision is helping us bring that reality to life," Parsons said.

Destiny launches in 2014 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. For more, check out GameSpot's interview with community manager Eric Osborne.
