Champions: Youth Movement

What began as an idea has since become a movement—a movement so big that not even the Hulk can get a grip on it! On December 7, join Marvel’s youngest heroes as they shake things up and turn their ideas into a reality in CHAMPIONS #3 by Mark Waid and Humberto Ramos.

In honor of the Champions’ youth movement, we’re taking a look at how some of Marvel’s newest—and “oldest”—teen heroes got their start as super heroes.

Bucky Barnes

Bucky made his first appearance in 1941, originally portrayed as Captain America’s teenage sidekick. He fought alongside Cap in WWII and apparently died while trying to escape a drone plane built by Baron Heinrich Zemo—but, really he plunged into icy waters and underwent suspended animation. After a Russian sub discovered his preserved body, they revived a brainwashed Bucky as The Winter Soldier.

Spider-Man (Peter Parker)

While attending a science event, teen Peter Parker suffered the bite of a radioactive spider and gained abilities. With newfound strength and homemade web shooters, Spider-Man became an overnight sensation. Since then he has protected New York City from some of the nastiest super villains, been cloned, fallen in love, and most importantly, learned that with great power comes great responsibility.

Nova (Richard Rider)

Chosen at random to succeed the alien Rhomann Dey and become the next Nova Prime, young Richard Rider gained super strength, the ability to fly, and a uniform with a life support system, but zero information on what to do with his newfound powers. He went headfirst into the super hero lifestyle, fighting villains in New York City and slowly, but surely, learning how to navigate his powers.

Prodigy

Chicago born and raised, David Alleynefirst came onto the scene when his mutant powers kicked in and he join the New Mutants Training Squad. As team leader, he transformed the X-Mansion into a post M-Day mutant sanctuary, searched for the infamous Magik, and helped battle the Skrull Invasion force in San Francisco, before joining the Young Avengers.

Wiccan

Billy Kaplan started out as a misunderstood Avengers fanboy. He first discovered his electrokinetic powers while standing up for himself against a school bully. He sought out his favorite hero, Scarlet Witch, for help only to find out that the Avengers has broken up. This led to him joining the Young Avengers where he briefly took on the Thor-inspired identity of Asgardian.

After sneaking out of her home to attend a party, Kamala Khan found herself enveloped in Terrigen Mists and had a vision of her hero, Carol Danvers, scolding her for disobeying her parents and asking her what she wanted in life, to which the teen replied “I want to be you.” From there, everything changed and Kamala emerged from her Terrigenesis cocoon as the new Ms. Marvel.

Spider-Gwen

Spider-Gwen lives on Earth-65, an alternate universe where Gwen Stacy got bitten by a radioactive spider instead of Peter Parker. Forced into a career as Spider-Woman, the youngster eventually embraced her new role as New York City’s unstoppable crimefighter and had her way with alternate universe villains such as Matt Murdock and Lizard.

Moon Girl

Lunella Lafayette stands out as a brilliant little girl with a big attitude and fearless mentality. When she found a Kree Omni-Wave Projector hidden beneath the Brooklyn Bridge, her teacher accidentally opened up a allowing the Killer-Folk and Devil Dinosaur to cross over. Lunella bonded with Devil via newfound Inhuman abilities and now looks for her place in the bigger Marvel Universe.

Hulk (Amadeus Cho)

A Korean-American boy from who became a Hulk after using special nanites to remove radiation from Bruce Banner and place it into his own body, Amadeus Cho also boasts an almost unparalleled intellect. He has defeated monsters with She-Hulk, battled Fin Fang Foom, brawled with Black Panther, and joined the Champions—but, he’s never too busy to protect his sister Maddy from harm’s way.
