Darksiders II confirmed for Wii U launch

Vigil Games lead designer says action title will be available on day one for Nintendo's new console with system-specific features.

Gamers who pick up a Wii U this holiday season will be able to take home a copy of Darksiders II on the same today, developer Vigil Games has confirmed.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Darksiders II lead designer Hayden Dalton said the Wii U version is being developed alongside the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC iterations. Additionally, a "small team" is working to ensure that the Wii U version uses the system's tablet controller in a "unique way," according to the developer.

The Wii U version of Darksiders II will boast features exclusive to the system, though Dalton was not able to provide specific examples.

"It's basically the core game, but then with added abilities to do certain things that you can't do on the other consoles," he said. "We're not basically heavily changing the core game to support the control system, but the control system will be an enhancement of the core game."

Darksiders II was previously anticipated to launch alongside the Wii U. The Wii U is due out worldwide this holiday season, but Nintendo has not announced a specific release date. The company will share more information regarding the system at the 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo, where final Wii U hardware will be on hand.

The Xbox 360, PS3, and PC iterations of Darksiders II are due out on June 26. The game follows the horseman Death instead of the original game's protagonist, War, and it tells a parallel story to the original rather than continuing on from that title's conclusion. In the game, Death will attempt to clear War's "good" name (he's accused of starting the end of times ahead of time) and save humankind in the process.
