DC’s New Superman Movie – Release Date, Cast, Director, And Everything Else To Know

Superman is back

James Gunn and Peter Safran are the new co-heads of DC Studios, and one of the most exciting projects kicking off the new era of DC is the next Superman movie. Formerly known as Superman Legacy, the film is now simply titled Superman, and it's shaping up to be one of 2025's most-anticipated films. In this gallery, we're rounding up everything we know about it.

This includes the cast, director, release date, and story details, along with quotes and commentary from the people involved in its development. There is a lot to know!

Superman is one of many upcoming DC film projects. The next big one is October's Joker: Folie à Deux, the highly anticipated sequel to 2019's Joker that brings back Joaquin Phoenix and adds Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. After that movie and Superman in July 2025 will come The Batman II starring Robert Pattinson in October 2026. The DC movie series is undergoing something of a shakeup, as Gal Gadot and Jason Momoa's Wonder Woman and Aquaman franchises might not continue under the leadership of Gunn and Safran.

But for now, here's everything we know about Gunn's new Superman movie.

What is Superman about?

The first essential thing to know is that it's no longer called Superman Legacy. When production on the film began on February 29--which just so happens to be Superman's birthday--Gunn announced that it had changed names to become simply "Superman."

"When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy. By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was Superman," Gunn said, though he did not elaborate.

Story details are being kept under wraps for now, but Safran told Deadline that the movie "focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing."

He added: "Superman represents truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old-fashioned."

Who's going to be in Superman?

The first thing fans might be wondering is why Henry Cavill is not coming back to play Superman once again. Some believed when he dropped out of The Witcher--without any real evidence beyond fan theories–that he was doing so to make room for his return as Superman. But this is not the case. Instead, David Corenswet--or David "Corenswole" as some have dubbed him due to his impressive muscle gains–is playing the part. What gives? Gunn himself cleared things up, saying the new Superman film will focus on an "earlier part of Superman's life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill."

Cavill already appeared as Superman in an origin story through Man of Steel, and he reprised the character multiple times in various other films over the years.

Gunn did say, however, that he had a "great meeting" with Cavill and is keeping him in mind for "exciting possibilities" down the road.

OK, now that all that is cleared up, here is who stars in the new Superman film:

  • David Corenswet as Superman
  • Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane
  • Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner
  • Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor
  • Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl
  • Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific
  • Maria Gabriela de Faria as The Engineer
  • Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen
  • Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho
  • Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher
  • Terence Rosemore as Otis

Is there a trailer for Superman?

As mentioned, production on Superman began on the last day of February this year. Gunn has said that because filming is only just beginning, no one should expect a trailer to come until 2025. Plans can always change, and fans might still hold out hope for a trailer, teaser, or other piece of news during San Diego Comic-Con this July or at some other point in the year.

Who's directing Superman?

James Gunn is the writer and director of Superman, which is a big deal because it's not every day that the co-head of an entire studio is also involved in the day-to-day production of a film. Gunn also wrote the script.

When is Superman coming out?

Superman comes to theaters on July 11, 2025. It will presumably come to Max at some point later on, but there is no word yet on when that could happen.
