Double Fine’s second Kickstarter successful

Brutal Legend studio's crowd-funding campaign for Massive Chalice crosses $725,000 target, extra funds to be used to expand game's scope.

Double Fine's second Kickstarter campaign has been successful.

The Brutal Legend and Psychonauts developer's crowd-funding effort for tactical strategy game Massive Chalice has crossed its $725,000 funding target after just five days.

The studio's original Kickstarter game--Broken Age--hit $1 million in under a day.

At press time, funding for Massive Chalice stands at $737,756 from more than 20,000 backers. Funding closes June 27.

Double Fine does not have any specific stretch goals laid out for Massive Chalice, though the developer said the game's scope will grow based on the amount of total backing it receives.

"There will be ongoing conversations with the community as new features are considered, so stay tuned and let us know what you'd like to see in the game," Double Fine said.

Double Fine designer Brad Muir, who created Iron Brigade and worked on Psychonauts and Brutal Legend, is heading up development on Massive Chalice. The game is inspired by tactical strategy games like XCOM, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Fire Emblem, as well as noble families like those found in Game of Thrones.

Massive Chalice boasts two main layers: strategy and tactics. The game also features permadeath, in that players will need to choose between keeping heroes on the battlefield or retiring them to create a new generation of combatants.

The game is in its "earliest stages of development" at Double Fine for Windows, Mac, and Linux, using the developer's own Buddha engine. It is expected to launch by September 2014.

Massive Chalice is the third project Double Fine is currently developing, adding to Dropchord and the point-and-click adventure game Broken Age.
