EVE: Valkyrie announced for Oculus Rift

EVE Online creator confirms space-combat VR game based on EVE universe will launch in 2014.

EVE Online developer CCP Games has announced that it will release virtual-reality space-combat game EVE: Valkyrie in 2014, as reported by AusGamers.

The game was previously shown to EVE Online series supporters as EVE-VR, a working prototype, at the company's EVE Fanfest event held in April this year. According to a previous PCGamesN article, the game shown at the time was a six-on-six dogfighting experience set in the EVE universe. The game took advantage of the Oculus Rift and allowed players to track enemy targets by tilting and turning the headset. Players were able to fight for either Amarr or Minmatar forces in matches running for three minutes.

No further gameplay details, information on intended release platforms, or potential integration with EVE Online have been revealed. While the Oculus Rift is currently a PC-focused peripheral, the EVE creator has previously also dabbled with console development, releasing first-person shooter Dust 514 on the PlayStation 3.

"From the moment this year's Fanfest attendees first got their hands on EVE-VR, the question has been, 'When can I have this?' CCP CEO Hilmar Petursson said in a statement on the studio's website. "What started as a passion project by a small, incredibly talented group of CCP developers became one of the most highly anticipated games of the year--before we even announced it. We have big plans for EVE: Valkyrie, and I can't wait to share more details later this year."

A 45-second trailer for the game can be viewed below.
