Frostbite Go engine coming to mobiles

The technology behind the Battlefield 3 game engine will be available for all major mobile platforms.

The name of the new Frostbite engine being developed solely for handheld consoles has been confirmed, according to the official Frostbite website. Developer DICE has pledged to bring Frostbite Go to "all major mobile platforms".

Plans for the engine were originally announced in October last year. The technology currently powers Battlefield 3 and Need for Speed: The Run. No further information or release date was made available.

EA Games label boss Patrick Soderlund revealed last year that the current version of the game engine--Frostbite 2--was originally designed to support next-generation games.

DICE's Battlefield 4 will be the first game to be released on the Frostbite 3 engine, to be followed by Dragon Age III: Inquisition, and the next Mass Effect game.
