Gears of War future should be more thoughtful – Bleszinski

Epic Games design director indicates "double-edged chainsaw" would be moving franchise in wrong direction, would rather evolve to a "Christopher Nolan way."

Epic Games' Locust trilogy concluded with Gears of War 3, and the studio now has a chance to forge out in a new direction with the franchise. For Epic design director Cliff Bleszinski, that direction likely won't be to further play up the franchise's penchant for profanity and gratuitous violence.

Speaking to The PA Report, Bleszinski said that he'd rather take the franchise into a place that emphasizes exploration and discovery, rather than shock value. This focus, he said, would be consistent with the essential qualities of the franchise, which he characterized as Marcus Fenix staring down impossible odds.

"If I were to pass Gears off to another studio, and they came back with a pitch of having a double-edged chainsaw, and the characters are more buff, and now you can pull off someone's head and s*** down their neck, and they had a character that makes Cole look tame’I would look at them and say, 'No, you're going in the exact wrong direction,'" he said. "Gears is always some of that, but I would want to further evolve it in more of a Christopher Nolan way."

Christopher Nolan is perhaps best known for directing the recent, and well-regarded, Batman movies, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. His work also includes mindbenders like Memento and Inception.

The final add-on for Gears of War 3, Forces of Nature, is expected to launch on March 27. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.
