GI Joe Spinoff Movie Snake Eyes Is Now Filming

While it's been seven years since the last time a GI Joe movie hit the theaters with 2013's GI Joe: Retaliation, the franchise's first spinoff is underway with Snake Eyes: GI Joe Origins.

The movie will star Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians) in the titular role as the legendary mute ninja who is a member of the elite fighting force. Golding revealed the news in an Instagram post which you can see below.

The film is now in production in Japan, where we'll get to learn how this character became the elite ninja who sometimes wears a mask with a mouth carved into it, even though he doesn't talk. Joining Golding will be Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) as Scarlett, Andrew Koji (Warrior) as Storm Shadow, Úrsula Corberó (Money Heist) as The Baroness, and Iko Uwais (The Raid) as Hard Master.

Snake Eyes will be directed by Robert Schwentke, known for his work on Insurgent, Allegiant, and the comic book movie Red. Evan Spiliotopoulos penned the upcoming film, a writer who has worked extensively with Disney, including the live-action Beauty and the Beast.

This will be the third movie in the GI Joe film franchise. 2009's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra brought in $302 million worldwide, and the 2013 followup, Retaliation, did $375 million globally. The latest installment in the franchise may be continuing to build the Hasbro movie universe, which was revealed back in 2015 and will feature films based on GI Joe, Micronauts, and MASK.

Snake Eyes will hit theaters on October 23, 2020.
