Halo hits 20 billion games

Bungie reveals players spent 235,182 years playing Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, and Halo: Reach since 2004; series now entirely in hands of Microsoft.

More than 20 billion Halo matches have been played over Xbox Live, Bungie has revealed, as part of a detailed send-off infographic published this weekend.

Since September 9, 2004, a total of 20,880,250,123 Halo matches have been played. Halo 2 accounted for 5.4 billion games, Halo 3 / Halo 3: ODST tallied 11.5 billion (including ODST online co-op), and Halo: Reach has amassed 3.9 billion.

All things said, gamers have logged 235,182 years playing Halo games so far. According to Bungie, this is equal to the time necessary for light to cross the Milky Way galaxy twice.

Players enjoyed shooting each other on the virtual battlefield, as gamers racked up 108,548,288,596 total kills across Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, and Halo: Reach. Additionally, players earned 79,027,866,182 medals from the three titles. For more statistics, check out the full infographic on Bungie.net.

March 31 marked Bungie's final day as captain of the Halo ship. Moving forward, Microsoft and its internal Halo studio--343 Industries--will handle all things related to the science fiction shooter series. That studio shipped Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary in November and is currently readying Halo 4 to ship this holiday season.
