Hasbro’s ‘Thor 2: The Dark World’ Figures

This weekend was the release of Marvel Studios Thor: The Dark World feature film.  The film has already racked up $86 million (up 31% from the original Thor’s opening weekend).

Despite being shown at SDCC 2013 back in July I’ve seen some questions pop up on line this week if Hasbro will be making figures for Thor: The Dark World at all.   The figures are out now but seem to only be showing up at a handful of retailers.   Toys R Us got them first, and while I have not seen them there yet, I have heard reports of people finding them at Target.   They can also be ordered on line at retailers like BigBadToyStore.com, EntertainmentEarth.com and Amazon.com.

Wave 1 consists of two versions of Thor, Loki, a dark elf and Kurse.

I managed to find two of the figures the other week at Toys R Us that we’ll look at below, but first here are the pictures of the first wave of figures from Hasbro’s booth at SDCC 2013.

If you haven’t seen the movie yet and you don’t want to know anything about it then this feature will have a few minor spoilers while describing the costume and accessories.  So this is your spoiler warning for those that want to go in fresh.

Battle Hamer Thor aka “Casual” Thor aka Bare Arms Thor – This version of Thor is from after the first Battle in the film, but Thor actually wears this poncho/cape several times in the film.    This is the bare armed version as opposed to the more armored up version of the costume he also sports in the film.   He has the standard version of his hammer with this figure, the armored version has an “energized” hammer with lighting coming off of it.  The poncho is removable if you pop off Thor’s head.  Battle hammer Thor has the standard articulation for a Marvel Universe scaled figure.  He has semi-ball head, semi-ball shoulders, elbows, wrists, ball hips, double knees and ball ankles.   There is no waist articulation.

Marvel’s Kurse – Kurse is one of the villains in the movie.   Originally a dark elf that becomes… more.  Kurse is taller than Thor, as he should be.  He comes with one accessory, a small ball.   I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be on of those implosion grenades that the dark elves had or if it’s that piece of coal looking thing that starts his transformation.   Either way it looks like this accessory was based on some early design concept and not what we saw in the actual film.

Kurse’s articulation is: semi-ball head, semi-ball shoulders, elbows, ball hips, and semi-ball knees.   He has no waist, wrist or ankle articulation.

Hasbro’s Thor: The Dark World figures are available now.
