HBO Max Offers Update On The Green Lantern TV Show

DC sure does love its live-action superhero shows. At the TCA winter press tour, Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content at HBO Max, was able to offer an update on the upcoming Green Lantern TV show, originally announced back in October.

Aubery said that the network is "still in the early stages of talking to [executive producer Greg Berlanti] and the series, so far, is going to span several decades and focus on the origin story of two major Green Lanterns on Earth." She went on to confirm that the space-side of the story would involve "a Green Lantern favorite character, Sinestro."

For DC comics fans, nodding to "two major Green Lanterns from Earth" doesn't particularly narrow things down. The comics pantheon includes seven core Green Lantern heroes from Earth, each with their own unique origin stories and four more Green Lantern adjacent heroes from Earth who, with a little bit of narrative maneuvering could possibly fit the bill. That said, it's certainly possible that the show will focus on two of the more recent additions to the Green Lantern Corps, Simon Baz, and Jessica Cruz, who were given their own buddy-cop title at the start of DC's Rebirth era back in 2016. Their book, Green Lanterns, focused predominantly on their exploits as newly enlisted Green Lanterns with jurisdiction over Earth, which would certainly fall in line with the Earth-based focus Aubery mentioned.

Sinestro, on the other hand, suggests the possible involvement of one of the most famous Green Lantern characters: Hal Jordan, who played a direct role in the ex-Green Lantern Corps hero's eventual turn to evil and the creation of the villainous fear-based Yellow Lantern Corps.

HBO Max will launch in May of 2020.
