Lego Lord of the Rings confirmed

Inserts found with new Lego Lord of the Rings toy line confirm Warner Bros. working on title based on J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy universe.

The next franchise to get spun into a Lego game will be J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy tome Lord of the Rings, according to a new report at MCV. The site reports that packaging materials found with the new Lego line of Lord of the Rings toys confirms the project.

On top of MCV's report, United Kingdom retailer Shop To posted (and then removed) a listing for Lego Lord of the Rings. A Google cache version of the product page is available, which reveals placeholder box art and an October 2012 release date.

The game is to be developed by the Warner Bros.-owned Traveller's Tales, which picked up the Lego license in 2004. The company has adapted a range of popular franchises into Lego games, including Star Wars, Batman, Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter, and Indiana Jones.

As of press time, neither Traveller's Tales nor Warner Bros. had responded to GameSpot's requests for comment.

Lego Lord of the Rings will not be the only new Lord of the Rings game in 2012. In October 2011, it was revealed that Warner Bros. was also at work on a new Hobbit title, which is to ship in advance of December's theatrical release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
