@Mattel Celebrates Masters of the Universe 40th Anniversary #MOTU40th

EL SEGUNDO, CA, October 12, 2022 – Today, Mattel, Inc. (NASDAQ: MAT) marks the global celebration for the 40th birthday of He-Man and the other Masters of the Universe and Evil Warriors alike, Man-At-Arms, Teela, Skeletor, Evil-Lyn, and Beast Man.

It has been 40 years since He-Man first declared “I have the power!” and the Masters of the Universe ensemble introduced their fight against evil Skeletor to the toy and action figure world. In 1982, the MOTU brand launched and has since ascended into a $2B franchise across toys and consumer products, solidifying the franchise’s role as an iconic pop culture fixture since the ‘80s.

The collection began with eight core action figures; He-Man, Man-At-Arms, Stratos, Teela, Beast Man, Mer-Man, Skeletor and Zodac, and expanded to 62 at the apex of the franchise. Since the MOTU brand genesis, the series morale was passionately built upon the message of becoming the best version of yourself. The brand has been reimagined and reintroduced as a complete 360 franchise with multiple toy lines, digital games, publishing titles, sold-out global collaborations and critically acclaimed animated content on Netflix. Fast forward to 2022, and the MOTU franchise has evolved and modernized into the digital space including activations in Roblox, Fall Guys and Cryptoys.

The brand is celebrating and honoring Eternia in its 40th year by:

  • TOY OF THE YEAR: Starting the year with a Toy of the Year Awards from the Toy Association, for Figure of the year Award for the Masterverse action figure line.
  • San Diego Comic-Con: He-Man and the Masters of the Universe action figures first hit store shelves in 1982. 40 years later, Mattel kicked off this landmark milestone with a robust presence at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con including signings, giveaways and Mattel’s first-ever Hall H Fan Panel, in which William Shatner’s participation in Masters of the Universe: Revolution was announced.
  • MOTUesday: Mattel launched a weekly social campaign called MOTUesday, keeping fans informed about product releases, artist collaborations, content drops and more.  The campaign spanned the period from San Diego Comic-Con, to He-Man’s birthday on October 12th.
  • ENTERTAINMENT:
    • Super Bowl LVI: The Rocket Mortgage commercial featuring He-Man and Skeletor (in addition to Barbie) topped USA Today’s poll as the public’s favorite Super Bowl commercial of 2022.
    • Masters of the Universe: Revelation – He-Man, Skeletor and their motley crew returned to the small screens last summer in Masters of the Universe: Revelation, a continuation of the classic storyline from the 80’s television series. Kevin Smith served as showrunner and the series featured an all-star voice cast including Mark Hamill, Lena Headey and Chris Wood, to name a few. Episodes are streaming now on Netflix.
    • Masters of the Universe: Revolution – announced at Geeked Week ‘22, Netflix, Mattel and Powerhouse Animation will bring an all-new story that brings the focus to He-Man vs. Skeletor like fans have never seen before. It’s technology versus magic as He-Man and the heroic warriors face the evil forces of Skeletor and their deadly threat to the planet in the next epic chapter in the battle for Eternia. Season release date and all-star cast to be announced.
    •  He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, a new CG animated take on the legendary hero, featuring Yuri Lowenthal, Kevin Conroy and George Takei, debuted its third season on Netflix.
  • DIGITAL GAMING – In April 2022, Mattel launched He-Man & Masters of the Universe on Roblox. This Fall, MOTU will debut digital gaming collaborations with Fall Guys as well as Cryptoys, the revolutionary new NFT platform that combines toys, gaming, and entertainment to create an expansive, playable universe.
  • MUSIC –Complementary soundtracks for both Masters of the Universe: Revelation Volume 1 / Volume 2 and He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (season 1) are available now on streaming platforms.
  • NEWS FLASH:
