Mattel’s MOTUC – Dragon Blaster Skeletor

Most fans figured that when Mattel announced Thunder-Punch He-man that Dragon Blaster Skeltor would be coming hot on his heels since they were companion (variant) figures back in the vintage line.

This one is a little strange in the MOTUC line as this Skeletor variant was based on the gimmick that the dragon-blaster squirted a mist of water when his head was pressed.  Since there are no action features in MOTUC this is really just “Dragon Piggy-back Skeletor.”  Mattel battles that idea with the bio that says Skeltor enslaved the dragon.

DB Skeltor has some nice added touches that make him stand out from previous Skeletor releases, such as Kobra Khan’s boots (with painted feet so they look like boots and not shin guards) and Whiplash’s fore-arms. His paint is very vibrant and clean… but as you have heard there are several parts that were cast in black plastic and painted over so any rub points can cause damage to the paint.  He has the same articulation as other releases of Skeletor, only his ab-crunch is limited because of the armor over-piece.

While the vintage version had plastic links for the chain, this new version has metal ones.  The chain is not removable from the chest armor or the wrist cuff.  The green lock from the vintage figure caries over to the MOTUC version.

The dragon is an improvement over his vintage counterpart.  The MOTUC version has a much more menacing look to him, than the stubby-legged 80′s version.  The dragon does detach from the armor, but it does not come off the chain.  Maybe Skeltor lost the key?   He has one point of articulation, and that’s a ball jointed head.  He does have the same neck peg as the other MOTUC figures so you can swap it out.

The armor is removable, and he comes with a purple version of the power sword.

The review samples that Mattel sent out to the various sites have all been pre-opened and the 3rd mini-comic was removed, I assume to prevent spoilers.  I’m homing Mattel brings some to hand out next week at Power-Con so I can finish the story.  Last year they gave out the first issue.

Others might have a monkey on their back, but the Evil Lord of Destruction™ has something much better … a dragon! No cute pet, this Dreadful Dragon features a ball-jointed head. The Dragon Blaster™ Skeletor® figure also comes with a purple Power Sword®, real metal chains and a vintage-style padlock to keep his vicious buddy locked down tight, as well as the final mini-comic in our 2012 three-issue series. (Although the vintage dragon shot water, this version does not – too messy!)

You can order your Dragon-Blaster Skeletor today, Sept 17th, 2012 on MattyCollector.com!
