NBA 2K14 skipping Wii U

2K Sports confirms upcoming NBA sim not coming to Nintendo's latest; game to launch day-and-date with Xbox One and PS4; Lebron James is cover athlete.

NBA 2K14 will be the latest title to skip the Wii U, 2K Sports confirmed today. Senior vice president of sports operations Jason Argent revealed the news today on a conference call.

"We are not doing a Wii U version this year," Argent said. "The decision was made internally that resources would be best put toward building a really, really amazing current-generation and next-generation game and we didn't want to take resources away from creating amazing experiences on’all those platforms."

Argent's comments came during a roundtable with media to officially announce NBA 2K14 and give first details about the project. The game will ship on October 1 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, while Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions will be available day-and-date when those platforms launch later this year.

Argent described NBA 2K14 as 2K Sports' "biggest endeavor yet" and said the game will offer "something for everyone." He also revealed that Miami Heat star Lebron James will be the game's cover athlete. He is appearing on a video game cover for the first time with NBA 2K14.

Gamers who preorder NBA 2K14 for Xbox 360 and PS3 will receive the King James Bonus Pack, which includes 10,000 worth of virtual currency, a Lebron James signature skill, access to James in the game's blacktop mode, and extra content for the Path to Greatness mode.

Commenting on NBA 2K14, James said, "It's going to be the best sports video game this world has ever seen. get ready."

Argent also fielded a question regarding the competition 2K faces in the marketplace from EA Sports' NBA Live series, which will return this year after years of absence.

"Regardless of what happens in the competitive landscape, our focus and our philosophy has just always been head down, create the best possible experience for fans year after year after year," Argent said. "That some objective, which has guided us over all of our years, will continue with 2K 14. So, we acknowledge the competition in the marketplace, but our focus is 100 percent on us and continuing to build a bigger and better and more evolved game experience year after year."
