Demi Lovato escapes her vulnerable side in her "Heart Attack" video.

Demi Lovato's had plenty to deal with over the course of her career (some good and some bad), but it goes without saying that she's come out on top a million times over, what with her stint on "The X Factor," and a brand-new forthcoming album, Demi. And now that we've finally heard (and sang in the mirror to) Demi's first single from her upcoming disc, "Heart Attack," we're fully prepared to absorb Demi's epic "Heart Attack" video, which pits two Demis against each other: a tough-as-nails rock star Demi versus a vulnerable, artistic Demi.

Directed by Chris Applebaum, "Heart Attack" opens with Demi gazing directly at us before diving into a simple, yet hyper-stylized sequence, seemingly inspired by Björk's Homogenic cover or Madonna's "Frozen" video. Following Demi's staring contest, the "Give Your Heart A Break" singer splits her time between singing directly to the camera with jet-black, oil-slicked hands (oh, so that's why she had those!) and rocking out with an explosive crew of badass backup musicians. We might be playing English major/amateur psychologist here, but we think "Heart Attack" illustrates the tension Demi feels between staying grounded and falling in love: She's a hardcore black-and-white rock Goddess and an artistic, vulnerable young lady all at once. Maybe in a little time, the two can learn to live harmoniously.

Look out for Demi's new disc when it drops on May 14.
