New Video: Justin Timberlake, ‘Mirrors’

Justin Timberlake illustrates an epic love story in his latest "Mirrors" video.

Perhaps to celebrate his recent stint on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" and his general list of infinite accomplishments, Justin Timberlake has dropped his "Mirrors" video the same day as The 20/20 Experience (way to keep us on our toes, dude). And as evidenced by the clip, nay, short film, it's time to bow down to the New Justin Timberlake -- the better dressed, hair straightened (don't think we didn't notice your inching away from those curls, bb), high-concept Justin 2.0. If this were still the millennium, we'd say "Justin 2000," but, er, we feel like Justin would rather not talk about the *NSYNC days. So let's just focus on what's in front of us -- the epic, emotionally wrought, perhaps-a-touch-too-long "Mirrors" video.

Directed by Floria Sigismondi, "Mirrors" takes us through the stages of an elderly couple's relationship (the couple in question being Justin's grandparents, William and Sadie, to which to video is dedicated). As the old woman mourns the loss of her late husband, she recalls their entire relationship, starting in the throws of teenage passion (lots of poodle skirts and bobby socks there) and moving into their (considerably less innocent) adult years. Through it all, love (and probably other things like respect, consideration, and kindness) prevailed. Clearly, Justin's already found a "mirror" of his own and is committed to emulating his grandparents' story -- that Jessica Biel is one lucky lady.

Oh, and did we mention that this is a long, long video? Justin doesn't show up until more than five minutes in, but at long last there he is, looking as suave as ever in his pointy-toed shoes and slick overcoat. After retelling his grandparents' story, Justin moves the video from metaphor to literal as he wanders around a funhouse lined with, yep, mirrors. But he's not alone -- Justin closes out his latest clip with a team of interpretive dancers and even sings directly to them as the lights fade in and out. While "Suit & Tie" was a Bond-smooth ode to Tom Ford and Alexander Wang, "Mirrors" is far and away the most artistic video Justin's ever done, packed with metaphor, meaning, and blink-and-you-miss-it visuals. We'll never say no to him in a "Suit & Tie," but we're really warming up to highbrow Justin -- so long as we have a tissue box handy.
