New Video: Wiz Khalifa, ‘Work Hard, Play Hard’

Wiz Khalifa plays harder than he works in his 'Work Hard, Play Hard' video.

Last night Wiz Khalifa quietly dropped the video for his Official Song of The Summer-nominated jam, "Work Hard, Play Hard." Whomever came up with the concept for this video is either really funny or accidentally funny because the whole thing plays out like that one episode of "The Simpsons" where Homer thinks Bart might be gay, so he takes him to someplace really manly, like a steel mill, but then the steel mill ends up turning into an after-hours gay nightclub. Okay, true, I highly doubt that was the actual inspiration, but I'm all for this Lil B-style of gender enlightenment.

It’s possible the director heard Roscoe in his head like I did when he first learned the title of the track, so this video could easily be more than coincidence. I’m not the only one on the internet to make the connection, and Wiz strikes me as the kinda guy who watches lots of cartoons. In the video, Wiz heads back to industrial Pittsburgh, to the abandoned Ajax Steel Mill, apparently. By day it’s just Wiz and his boys, wearing hats and standing in fields (#TGOD). By night the whole thing turns into a bar filled mostly with bros. At one point, inexplicably, there’s a ballerina. But Wiz is back doing shots with the gang at the bar, which eventually turns into a weird, wet t-shirt party. (YOLO.) Patton Oswalt has a joke about '80s metal videos that are like this, and Wiz is essentially the modern equivalent of an '80s metal rock star, so I guess it makes sense. Especially if you're me.

I gotta say, the song is shamelessly great. It’s Wiz Khalifa at his Wiz Khalifiest -- it's co-produced by the guys known for making the hits on Wiz's Rolling Papers, Norwegian bridge-writers, Stargate, and pop wunderkind Benny Blanco helps. Like most of Rolling Papers, "Work Hard, Play Hard" grows and grows on you until it ends up being the most-played track in your iTunes playlist. Oh, and (shameless plug) he’ll be performing "Work Hard, Play Hard" live at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards on June 3 at 9/8c. So you should probably watch that.
