Next-gen Deus Ex in the works

Eidos Montreal confirms new game in series coming to PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 as part of new Deus Ex: Universe program.

Eidos Montreal today announced that it has entered into production of a new Deus Ex game for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. The most recent core Deus Ex game was 2011's Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

"We're very excited about it at the studio and I wanted to let you know that most of the team behind Deus Ex: Human Revolution is already working hard on this new game," Eidos Montreal studio head David Anfossi said. "It took us four years to learn how to create a unique Deus Ex experience with Human Revolution and it was important for me to keep this knowledge within the franchise."

The image released in conjunction with the game announcement is a piece of concept art that shows "trans-humanism segregation," described as the backdrop to Eidos Montreal's vision for the next-gen Deus Ex game.

"It represents a 'ghetto-city' voluntarily built in order to separate the classes. The people in this segregated class have reshaped their environment, nostalgic for their ideal of Cyber Renaissance," Anfossi said. "This dark and dystopian vision sets the tone for things to come in Deus Ex."

Gamers excited for the new Deus Ex game may want to pare back their enthusiasm, as Anfossi said "don't expect to hear much more from us just yet."

The untitled next-gen Deus Ex game will be part of a new concept Eidos Montreal is calling the Deus Ex: Universe. The aim of this program is to "create an ongoing, expanding, and connected game world built across a generation of core games."

"It's a commitment on our part to deliver meaningful content that expands the franchise on a regular basis and to deliver a deep conspiracy that will span several connected Deus Ex games, creating a more immersive and richer experience than ever before," Anfossi said.

Deus Ex: Universe will include PC and console games, as well as titles and experiences available through tablets, smartphones, books, and graphic novels.

It was also confirmed today that the Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut will be released on October 22 in North America and October 25 in PAL regions on Wii U, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. The game will feature second-screen functionality through SmartGlass, PlayStation Vita, and the Wii U GamePad.

Eidos Montreal is currently working on 2014's Thief reboot for current- and next-generation consoles.
