No plans for Torchlight MMO

Runic Games says there are no plans for Torchlight MMO; dev team would like to move away from RPGs in the future; team discusses thoughts on Diablo III, Blizzard, and Torchlight II on Linux.

Torchlight developer Runic Games has participated in a Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA) session, where the team revealed that it has no plans to work on another Torchlight title or a Torchlight MMO.

When the team (which included Max Schaefer and Erich Schaefer) was asked about the possibility of a Torchlight MMO, Travis Baldree replied:

"I'll be frank: we have no plans to jump into that right now. The landscape is a little different than a few years ago, and creating the amount of content we did for Torchlight 2 was a supreme effort with a team this size. Taking on an MMO immediately afterward is not our current desire."

When asked about post-launch content for Torchlight II, Runic revealed that it wants to release new map scrolls for endgame, phase beast portal rooms, and more variations of already existing levels for increased randomisation, saying: "We will just have to wait and see how fans react, and what they ask for and try to accommodate if we can."

The Runic team also touched on the possibility of bringing Torchlight II to Linux, saying that it is on the agenda as a point of discussion, but that at the same time, the Runic team is small and unfamiliar with Linux and has no plans to expand or take on "busy" work. However, the Runic team acknowledged that there was a demand for Torchlight II on Linux, and ended with: "we do like to please".

When asked about its relationship with Blizzard, and whether the Runic team plays Diablo III, Erich Schaefer said that if he could afford to buy the rights to Diablo, he would:

"While I think [Diablo III] is a tremendous accomplishment, there's a couple things they did that really hurt my personal ability to keep playing. The auction house, even the regular one, detracts from my own loot gathering. I hate seeing all the great stuff that's so easy to purchase and is so much better than what I can find on my own.

"There's no way I could ever see working on another Diablo product with one extremely improbable exception. If I could afford to buy back the rights, I would in a heartbeat. And then I'd turn it over to David Brevik, the true heart and brain behind Diablo."

Regarding the studio's plans for the future, Runic said that it doesn't really know what it wants to do next, but that it would like to take a break from RPGs for a while.

"It's pretty up in the air," Erich Schaefer said. "We have a lot of cool ideas and nothing pinned down yet. From my perspective, I think we'll probably continue to incorporate RPG elements and randomisation in some new hybrid, character-based game. Maybe with more of a sand-box openness? Maybe with unpredictable emergent or procedural content. I can pretty much guarantee it'll have loot, though!"
