Obi-Wan Kenobi Episode 3: Easter Eggs And References Breakdown

Episode 3 of Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney+ has arrived and what an awesome journey it took us on. The episode takes us to our third planet of the series so far--Mapuzo, a new location in Star Wars lore--and includes plenty of action, intrigue, more little Leia, so much Darth Vader, and even a nod to a character last seen in The Clone Wars.

Warning: The following contains spoilers for the third episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi, "Part III." If you've yet to watch this installment, stop reading now.

In "Part III," Obi-Wan and Leia escape to Mapuzo, but the Empire is hot on their heels. And the Inquisitors aren't traveling alone. Darth Vader journeys with them to the planet in search of Kenobi, leading to an epic showdown that shows just how much has changed in the power balance between Obi-Wan and his former apprentice in the 10 years since Revenge of the Sith.

It should be noted that this episode goes out of its way to make Vader a truly horrifying character, essentially treating him like the galaxy's boogie man--something that doesn't happen all too often. It works like a charm here, as this is the scariest the Sith Lord has been in quite a while.

Naturally, there are also plenty of Easter eggs and references to other characters, events, and locations throughout the Star Wars franchise that we were able to pick up on. Take a look at them below, then make sure you check out the Easter eggs from the first two episodes.

1. Master Qui-Gon

The episode begins with a callback to The Phantom Menace, as Obi-Wan calls out to his late Jedi master Qui-Gon Jinn. Of course, Qui-Gon was killed in a lightsaber duel (of the fates) with Darth Maul. We also hear the words of both Qui-Gon and Yoda from the prequels, as Obi-Wan is tortured by the information that Anakin has survived and become the all-powerful Darth Vader.

2. Some assembly required

During this scene, we also flash to Anakin being removed from the bacta tank that he rests in, before assembling his limbs and Darth Vader armor. What a horrible daily routine the Sith lord must go through.

3. Mustafar

We see Vader's home on Mustafar, the fiery planet where he lost his battle to Obi-Wan, which resulted in lost limbs, severe burning, and living out his life under the Vader helmet.

4. Where is he?

That voice might sound familiar. James Earl Jones returns to Star Wars once more to provide the voice of Darth Vader. Jones originated the role back in A New Hope and has appeared in a long list of Star Wars projects ever since. It remains to be seen if/how we'll hear Hayden Christensen speak as Anakin on the show.

5. That's not how it works

When asked by Leia if he can use the Force to make their ship go faster, Obi-Wan tells her, "That's not how it works." That line is very reminiscent of Han Solo's (Harrison Ford) quip to Finn (John Boyega) of, "That's not how the Force works." It was much funnier coming from Han.

6. Hey, Ani

While trekking across Mapuzo with Leia, Obi-Wan sees someone that looks a lot like Anakin in a Jedi hood. Clearly his eyes are playing tricks on him, as that's not what Ani looks like anymore. That said, perhaps this is how the show will weave Christensen into the story, as a vision seen only by Kenobi.

7. I see her mother's face

When Obi-Wan accidentally lets Leia's name slip to the Stormtroopers, he quickly covers her tracks by saying that was his late wife's name, who he sees in their "daughter." Of course, who he actually sees is Padme, Leia's mother whom Obi-Wan knew quite well. His excuse, though, clues Leia into the fact that he knew her birth mother, which makes her wonder if he's actually her dad. Of course, we all know who the father is.

8. Obi-Wan has a brother?

Speaking to Leia, Obi-Wan reveals he remembers having a baby brother before being taken away to train to become a Jedi. As for whether Obi-Wan actually does have a brother, that's a bit confusing. In the 1995 Star Wars customizable card game, Owen Lars (who takes in Luke on Tatooine) is labeled Obi-Wan's brother--something that was actually first hinted at in the novelization of Return of the Jedi. However, in Attack of the Clones, Owen is revealed to be the half-brother of Anakin Skywalker. So, while Owen doesn't seem to be the canonical brother of Obi-Wan here, it's interesting to note that at some point in Star Wars lore, that was the case.

9. Imperial probe droid

These droids have been seen throughout the Star Wars movies. Still, it's always fun to see one floating into the frame.

10. That's gotta hurt

Ever wonder just how powerful lasers are in Star Wars? This poor Stormtrooper was literally cut in half by one. He was also the one who belted out the traditional Wilhelm scream, which has been heard throughout the franchise.

11. Quinlan was here

In the safehouse on Mapuzo, Obi-Wan sees the name Quinlan etched in a wall. This is a nod to Quinlan Vos, a Jedi who first appears in The Phantom Menace and went on to make a few appearances in The Clone Wars.

12. The first meeting

While fans will remember Obi-Wan vs. Vader from A New Hope, it turns out that wasn't the first time they crossed paths. We see here that Vader found Obi-Wan on Mapuzo. Rather than fight, though, Obi-Wan tried to escape after exchanging a few words with his former apprentice.

"What have you become?" he asks Vader. The Sith lord reponds, "I am what you made me." Still, they end up dueling because somehow Vader (the one that breathes super loud and moves slowly) manages to sneak up on Obi-Wan.

13. The Jedi insignia

While searching the safehouse, Third Sister finds the Jedi insignia carved into the wall, confirming her suspicions that this is definitely a safe passage for the wanted Jedi.

14. Turnabout is fair play

After Obi-Wan left Anakin to burn to death on Mustafar, Vader looks to do the same to him on Mapuzo. He drags his former master through a fire, telling him it was his turn to "suffer." The event leaves Obi-Wan's arm horribly burned, though he's ultimately saved from Vader.

15. Oh, and one more thing

If you thought Freck, the alien that gave Obi-Wan and Leia a ride before turning them over to the Empire, sounded familiar, that's because he's voiced by none other then Zach Braff. If you stuck around for the end credits, you no doubt saw the Scrubs star's name pop up. It remains to be seen if we'll see him again, though.
