Resident Evil creator reveals new survival horror game

Shinji Mikami and Tango Gameworks offer first glimpse and details of new title code-named "Zwei"; platforms, release date TBA.

Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami has revealed his new game with Tango Gameworks. The latest issue of Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu (translated by Andriasang) has the scoop on the studio's new game, a survival horror title in development under the working title "Zwei."

Mikami will serve as the game's executive director and is said to be "fully involved" in the project's development. As for why Mikami chose survival horror as a genre, he said he wanted to build a game that is in line with player expectations. Given his history working on the Resident Evil franchise, the survival horror genre was the best fit.

Mikami said initial development on Zwei began at the end of 2010, with the game's "basic settings" presently about halfway finished. The developer did not share which platforms the game will ship for, but noted they would "probably" be high-definition systems.

As for its name, Zwei is the German word for "two," but Mikami said in an update to the developer's website that this name is not intended to reveal specifics about the game. Additionally, the first images of Zwei (above right) are not necessarily representative of the final product. According to the developer, the shots represent the "feel and tone" of the project.

No release date has been announced for Zwei, but last month it was reported that the project would not be released in 2012. Beyond Capcom's Resident Evil franchise, Mikami has held creative-lead roles on Platinum Games' Vanquish and Grasshopper Manufacture's Shadows of the Damned.
