Etrian Odyssey remake out in North America this October for 3DS

Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl to feature story mode and classic mode.

The next entry in Atlus' Etrian Odyssey series is a remake of the first game, tailored for the 3DS.

The remake will be called Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl and will be out on October 1 for North American markets. The game is an update of the 2007 RPG previously on the DS, and will feature two modes: classic mode and story mode.

The first mode lets players create their own party and play through a series of dungeons filled with all manner of random encounters. The second mode tells the story of main character Fredericka and her companions as they solve the mystery behind her past in the land of Etria. Unlike in the previous game--Etrian Odyssey IV--players can mix and match skills they acquire throughout the game.

RPG fans in North America can preorder the game for $39.99 on Atlus' North American web portal. Check out GameSpot for coverage on the fourth game.

Ubisoft on new IPs: “We won’t even start if we don’t think we can build a franchise out of it”

Senior vice president of sales and marketing says that company will not "fire and forget" on potential series due to overwhelming costs.

Ubisoft senior vice president of sales and marketing Tony Key has said in an [A]list Daily interview that its upcoming action title Watch Dogs will be the foundation of a major franchise.

Key said that while the game is putting Ubisoft "in a really good place," the company will not be satisfied with just the first entry. "That's what all our games are about; we won't even start if we don't think we can build a franchise out of it. There's no more fire and forget ’ [starting and releasing one is] too expensive."

Key also explained the difficulty in launching and building up new intellectual properties. "There's no proven DNA for people to latch onto for people to say 'I understand what that brand is about.' Especially when you're annualizing something like Just Dance or an Assassin's Creed, you understand that experience and you either want to be part of that community or you don't. We can tap into that and get a faster start."

"With Assassin's Creed IV, we start with those 4 million users on our Facebook page. With Watch Dogs, we're in acquisition mode--we're trying to find people who are intrigued by the concept of what Watch Dogs is all about, about the surveillance and the hacking. It's a whole different strategy in the social space--we're trying to acquire people, where with Assassin's Creed we're trying to get more engagement."

Key added that despite the press being excited for Watch Dogs, there are people outside the gaming community who aren't aware of the game's existence. "We're in blockbuster world, and Watch Dogs needs to be a blockbuster because it deserves to be and as a company that's what we need it to be. It's the most ambitious production in the history of Ubisoft, and we need to make sure that everybody who likes video games has a chance to decide that this game is going to be hot. That's the hard part about a new brand, that awareness outside the core needs to be created."

WWE 2K14 preorders get Ultimate Warrior

Playable character will be exclusive to those who preorder the fighting game for Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3.

2K today announced that Ultimate Warrior will be a preorder bonus for WWE 2K14. The playable character will be exclusive to those who reserve a copy of the fighting game for the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 from participating retailers.

"It was my good fortune to be his creator and performer, and I am humbled by all those fans who've not only kept his legacy alive, but deepened it over time," Warrior said in a statement.

Ultimate Warrior made his WWE debut in 1987 and is known for his ring entrance and personality, among other traits.

"Fans love him, opponents fear him, and everyone can agree that he's one of the most iconic Legends in WWE history," said 2K senior director of marketing Chris Snyder in a statement.

WWE 2K14 launches October 29 in North America and November 1 internationally.

2K parent company Take-Two Interactive acquired the World Wrestling Entertainment license for video games earlier this year following THQ's bankruptcy. The multiyear licensing agreement will see WWE games continue to be developed by Yuke's.

Diablo III headed to next-gen in 2014 – Report

Blizzard developers say upcoming next-gen console versions will not be launch titles for new platforms; no plans for portable version.

Diablo III will launch on next-generation consoles in 2014, according to Blizzard Entertainment designers speaking with Diablo Fans.

The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions are slated for release on September 3. Currently, the game is confirmed for the PlayStation 4 but not the Xbox One.

Game director Josh Mosqueira and designers Travis Day and Wyatt Cheng told the site that launching in 2014 will allow Blizzard time to create unique features for each platform.

Blizzard has previously revealed that Diablo III on the PS4 will use the DualShock 4's new touchpad for inventory management.

The designers also confirmed in the interview that there are currently no plans to bring Diablo III to portable devices.

Diablo III originally launched for Windows PC and Mac in May 2012. The game has sold more than 12 million copies as of December 31.

Oculus VR wants headset to be free, eventually

Virtual reality company says Oculus Rift headset could eventually be given away through subsidized offer.

Developer Oculus VR would "love" for its Oculus Rift virtual reality headset to be free one day, CEO Brendan Iribe told Edge during the recent Develop conference in Brighton.

In discussing launch plans for the device, Iribe said the Oculus Rift is expected to be publicly released for $300. However, through potential subsidized offers, the headset could be free sometime in the future, he said.

"The lower the price point, the wider the audience," Iribe said. "We have all kinds of fantasy ideas. We'd love it to be free one day, so how do we get it as close to free as possible? Obviously it won’t be that in the beginning. We're targeting the $300 price point right now but there's the potential that it could get much less expensive with a few different relationships and strategies."

Sony is considering "many" pricing options for the PlayStation 4, while Microsoft has already released a subsidized Xbox 360. This business model, also widespread for cell phones, could be implemented for the Oculus Rift, Iribe said.

"You can imagine if Microsoft and Sony can go out and subsidize consoles because there's enough money to be made on software and other areas, then there's the potential that this, in partnership, could get subsidized," Iribe said.

"Let's say there was some game you played in VR that everybody loved and everybody played and we made $100 a month--or even $10 a month--at some point the hardware's cheap enough and we're making enough that we could be giving away the headset."

Iribe made clear that "we're not there yet," but the company is thinking "all the time" about how it can make the Oculus Rift free.

Oculus Rift headsets are currently available at $300 for development kits. Oculus VR recently secured $16 million in venture capital funding to "accelerate" development. No public release date for the headset has been announced.
