52 episodes of a new Sonic cartoon to air on Cartoon Network next year.

Sonic the Hedgehog will get a new 52-episode CG cartoon in 2014, Sega has announced.

Called Sonic Boom, the show's 11-minute episodes will feature the character alongside sidekicks Tails, Knuckles, and Amy. Eggman will also feature as a the show's primary antagonist, with Sega promising new villains alongside a return of old characters.

Sonic Boom will be broadcast first on Cartoon Network in North America, and CANAL J and GULLI in France. The show will reach other countries in the future.

Sega describes the show as a comedy, meaning it is unlikely to adopt the same dystopian tone as the short-lived Sonic the Hedgehog TV series which aired between 1993 and 1994.

Other Sonic cartoon tie-ins over the years have included the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic X, and Sonic Underground.

The latest Sonic game, Sonic: Lost World, will be released for Wii U and 3DS on October 29.
