Sony waives $99 fee for PS Mobile devs

PlayStation maker "throwing down the gauntlet" by removing publisher license fee until September.

Sony today announced that it will waive the $99 PlayStation Mobile publisher license fee for the summer, allowing developers to create games for the PlayStation Vita or any other certified device for free.

"This summer, we're throwing down the gauntlet for PlayStation Mobile development and are removing any existing barriers to get your brainchild of a game on this new PlayStation platform," senior manager of mobile content acquisition Sarah Thomson said in a statement.

The PlayStation Mobile publisher license is required for distributing games through the PlayStation Store. It is also needed for debugging and testing games.

Developers can obtain a license for free through the PlayStation Mobile dev portal beginning today. The promotion ends September 2, though Sony said the duration of the fee waiver is subject to change.

PlayStation Mobile launched during October 2012. More information about the platform can be found at its official website.
