Star Wars Battlefront Seeing “Extremely Strong Preorders”

During an earnings call this afternoon, Electronic Arts COO Peter Moore revealed that DICE's upcoming shooter Star Wars Battlefront is enjoying "extremely strong preorders." He didn't share any specific numbers.

But, with the rise of digital gaming, physical preorders don't mean as they much as they might have used to, Moore acknowledged.

"More and more, as we see digital start take a hold with our consumers, that preorders become less of a key indicator," he said.

Looking ahead, Moore said he expects Battlefront's showing at Gamescom next week to be a "pivotal" moment for the game. Gamescom, unlike E3, is open to the public, and historically draws crowds in the hundreds of thousands.

"We expect to see a tremendous response from that," Moore said.

Moore's comments came in response to a question about how Battlefront's preorder numbers compare to those of Battlefield Hardline. He did not answer that part of the question.

Overall, Battlefront is expected to be a big-seller for EA, as the company anticipates that it will sell 9-10 million units by March 31, 2016.

Battlefront launches on November 17 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, just a few weeks before J.J. Abrams' Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awkens hits theaters. Everyone who buys Battlefront will receive a free expansion called The Battle of Jakku, which is based on the upcoming movie.

In other recent news about Battlefront, EA has told fans not to worry about the game being delayed. We also today learned about Battlefront's new "Blast" mode, the game's version of team deathmatch.
